Painting the Way of the Cross’ The fourteen huge paintings in the Jesuit Church in Edinburgh (each 8X16 feet), which meditate on the passion and death of Jesus Christ, are the largest of their kind in Europe. This hour-long talk and tour with Adrian Porter sj will explore these remarkable works by Bavarian artist, Peter Rauth (1828-96), and the sacred music, text and ritual that accompany them. The paintings were created between 1871 and 1874, the cost of the commission being raised by donations from the people of the parish. The paintings were blessed and formally opened in 1875. Restoration work was carried out on all fourteen paintings between 1999 and 2002, and they are once again as vibrant as when they were created.
