S-290 Intermediate Wildland Fire Behavior
About this Event
S-290 Intermediate Wildland Fire Behavior
CGTA Wildland Academy 2027
The Columbia Gorge Training Association (CGTA) is offering S-290 Intermediate Wildland Fire Behavior for firefighters who are developing into fireline supervisors and want a stronger understanding of how fire behaves on the ground.
This National Wildfire Coordinating Group (NWCG) course is the second course in the fire behavior series, building on S-190. Students learn to assess the fire environment, anticipate changes in fire behavior as fuels, weather, and topography change or align, and use that information for fireline decision-making and risk management.
This is a blended course: students complete a self-paced online portion before attending two days of instructor-led training.
Course Topics
Fire Weather
Covers temperature, relative humidity, wind, atmospheric stability, and weather patterns that drive fire behavior, including how to take and use weather observations.
Fuels
Examines fuel types, fuel moisture, and fuel characteristics and how they affect fire spread and intensity.
Topography
Explains how slope, aspect, and terrain features influence fire behavior.
Anticipating Fire Behavior
Brings fuels, weather, and topography together to predict changes in fire behavior that impact on-the-ground decisions and firefighter safety.
