Ryland Moranz has come into his own in these strange times. A folk/bluegrass multi instrumentalist and singer-songwriter from Lethbridge, Alberta in the traditional territory of the Siksika, Piikani and Kainai peoples, Ryland has stepped into the great beyond; empathetically exploring his own stories and the stories of others.
His compositions span bygone days, the here and now, and what may yet be to come, both for himself and for us all.
In the rolling foothills where the horizon meets the endless expanse of sky, Ryland Moranz finds his muse. Born of the prairie winds and baptized in the words of the great departed songsmiths before him, his music echoes the timeless tales of those for whom nothing is promised. Whom have come and have gone and who’s tired forms still traverse the rugged terrain of the human spirit.
With a voice tempered by both joy and sorrow, Moranz channels the spirit of a songwriters songwriter. From the backroads of his Alberta home to the dimly lit stages of a world on the brink, his strings resonate with the ache of a heart that beats in rhythm with the land he borrows on which to spend stolen time. In each lyric weaves the poetry of resilience and redemption; where love blooms amidst the thorns of hardship and dreams take root in the fertile soil of perseverance. His melodies a testament to the quiet strength found in the ordinary moments that define a life.
Ryland’s anticipated forthcoming album, “Better/Worse” will be released with Tonic Records on Sept 27, 2024. Recorded at Barnhouse Studio on Vancouver Island by John Raham (Frazey Ford, Dan Mangan) and produced by Leeroy Stagger, “Better/Worse” takes an earnest snapshot of a world emerging from the brink, or rather, from one brink to another. A spiritual successor to Ryland’s acclaimed 2021 offering “XO, 1945”, "Better/Worse” turns the focus from where we have been to where we may be going. The title of the album, and its subsequent focus is an attempt to quantify our current common state of being as we collectively and individually experience it. Each song is a twist of the microscope, observing the weary and jubilant exploits of a world caught in the acceleration of modernity, self-discovery, and reflection. Charged In the search to find purpose in entropy. To shed the fear of the unknown. To love your neighbour. To accept obligation. To hear the hard truths. To attempt to understand the world, or at least part of it; yourself, and your place within it all. For those who seek a melody that resonates with the marrow of existence, Better/Worse dreams a beacon of hope and harmony in a world that yearns for the echoes of its own wilderness.
Ryland’s 2021 album, “XO 1945” was nominated for contemporary album of the year by the Canadian Folk Music Association. “XO 1945” continued the grand tradition of great storytellers, filtering the spirits and genius of literary giants like Kurt Vonnegut and Ernest Hemingway through the compositional templates determined by Townes Van Zandt and John Prine.
Ever the wanderer, Ryland has relentlessly toured Canada, the USA, UK, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Germany, the Netherlands, Australia and New Zealand, sharing shared the stage with great acts like the Dead South, Willie Watson, Josh Ritter, Barney Bentall, JJ Shiplet, Luke Doucet, John Wort Hannam, C.R. Avery, Whitehorse, Leeroy Stagger and You, Me, Everybody. Ryland also plays as a multi-instrumentalist for Leeroy Stagger, Barney Bental, JJ Shiplet and countless others, with whom he has toured Canada, The United States, and Europe.
In the fall of 2023, Ryland embarked on a triumphant tour across Australia and New Zealand with 'Peace Run Record’s' Andrea Kirwin, captivating audiences with his evocative and soul stirring performances. From intimate venues to vibrant festivals, Ryland left a lasting mark on the Australian/New Zealand music scene, garnering acclaim for his emotive songwriting and magnetic stage presence.
