Join us on October 18th from 9 AM to 1 PM for an engaging Rye Straw Basket Weaving Workshop at the Berks History Center. Guided by Education Curator, Vicky Heffner, participants will explore this distinctive form of basketry, which is deeply rooted in the traditions of southeastern Pennsylvania. Rye straw basket weaving, almost exclusive to the German settlers of the region, cleverly utilized rye straw to craft food storage containers, as its natural scent repels rodents, making it ideal for preserving food. The coil technique, akin to sewing a basket together rather than traditional weaving, is both innovative and practical, making it accessible even for beginners.
This first-time-ever BHC workshop offers participants the chance to delve into the history and techniques of rye straw basketry, gaining hands-on experience in crafting their own basket. Whether you're a seasoned artisan or a curious beginner, this workshop is perfect for anyone interested in historical crafts. You'll leave with your own handcrafted basket and a deeper appreciation for this unique cultural heritage.
