What is it about siblings’ voices that makes them blend so magically? Sisters Ruth and Sadie Price present spine-tingling harmonies as they belt out rousing chorus songs and maybe a shanty or two.
Firm favorites of Whitby Folk Week, and regulars at many traditional singers’ clubs and festivals around England, the two sisters offer some of the finest examples of traditional Yorkshire song. Three songs in particular, written by Gus Gomersal, a close family friend, recount local lore and legend: Whitby Bells, The Eskdale Hare and The Barley Queen. All three are sure to send a shiver up a listener’s spine—the first for its evocative harmonies, the others for the chilling tales they tell.
Ruth and Sadie grew up in a decidedly musical family. Their repertoire includes songs from their father, the late Bill Price, a well-known traditional singer/songwriter during the 1970s. Their mum, Wendy Price, a stalwart on the local Whitby folk scene, penned some of his tunes. Small wonder that their children would be carrying the family flag forward.

Getting to the Concert: The Whitby Rifle Club YO21 3EW is located on the West Cliff Sports Ground, across from the Whitby Leisure Center. The ample public parking area is free November–February. The club operates a full bar, but does not sell food.
