Vynikající hollywoodský herec, nezapomenutelný Gladiátor, cynický makléř Max Skinner z Dobrého ročníku nebo geniální matematik Nash v Čisté duši, držitel Oscara a Zlatých globů Russell Crowe, je zároveň mnoho let i skvělým a uznávaným hudebníkem. S kapelou The Gentlemen Barbers vystoupí 23. května 2027 vůbec poprvé v Praze, ve Foru Karlín, kde zahájí své evropské turné.
Co o své hudební kariéře říká sám Russell Crowe? „Možná o mně víte, že 30 let hraju ve filmech, zároveň ale posledních 40 let hraju i po večerech s kapelou.“
Na projektu The Gentlemen Barbers zpěvák a herec usilovně a v tichosti pracoval poslední čtyři roky, muzikanti se ale znají a spolupracují spolu již dlouhá desetiletí. Dave Kelly (bicí) a Stewart Kirwan (trubka) byli členy kapely Thirty Odd Foot of Grunts a zároveň hráli s Crowem v kapele The Ordinary Fear of God, jejíž součástí byl Stu Hunter (klavír) a v koncertní sestavě také Chris Kamzelas (kytara). James Hazelwood (basová kytara) do kapely perfektně zapadl a s jejími členy ho pojí dlouholeté přátelství. Z irského města Cavan pochází Lorraine O’Reilly známá svým nádherným, chraplavým a energickým hlasem. S Crowem se seznámila při nahrávání duetu pro album „Walk like Kings“ skupiny Bible Code Sundays, stali se přáteli a od roku 2017 spolu vystupují.
„Tahle kapela má svůj charakter a ‚drajv‘. Hrajeme spoustu písní s příběhem, ale zároveň víme, že jsme tu proto, abychom publiku zvednuli náladu a lidé si s námi užili skvělý večer. „Rád hraju v hospodách. Tak jsem vyrůstal. I když mi moje filmová práce zabírá spoustu času, nikdy jsem nepřestal s muzikou. Moje cesta k filmu začala hraním v kapelách, na turné a vydáváním desek. Práce v kapele mě přivedla k muzikálům, kde mne nějakým jeden filmový režisér viděl vystupovat (v Blood Brothers) a pozval mě na konkurz.“
Zbytek je, jak se říká, historie. Po více než 40 mezinárodních oceněních, včetně cen BAFTA, SAG, Oscara a Zlatých glóbů, a bezpočtu skvělých filmů si Crowe stále zachovává svou lásku k bezprostřednosti živého vystoupení.
„Ať už jsou to písně nebo filmy, vždy jde o příběh. Rozjedeme to naplno. The Gentlemen Barbers se pohybují mezi R&B, gospelem, drsnými country písněmi o vraždách, temnými valčíky a silnými, inspirativními písněmi k společnému zpívání. Bude to skvělý večer.“

An outstanding Hollywood actor—the unforgettable Gladiator, the cynical stockbroker Max Skinner from “A Good Year*, or the brilliant mathematician Nash in “A Beautiful Mind”—Oscar and Golden Globe winner Russell Crowe has also been a superb and acclaimed musician for many years. With his band, The Gentlemen Barbers, he will perform for the very first time in Prague on May 23, 2027, at Forum Karlín, where he will kick off his European tour.
As Russell Crowe explains: “You might know me from my day job, for the 30 years I’ve been making feature films. But at night time for the last 40 years I play music.”
The singer and actor has been working quietly on The Gentlemen Barbers project for the past four years, though the musicians have known each other and collaborated for decades. Dave Kelly (drums) and Stewart Kirwan (trumpet) were members of the band Thirty Odd Foot of Grunts as well as playing with Crowe in The Ordinary Fear of God, which included Stu Hunter (piano) and in its touring form also included Chris Kamzelas (guitar). James Hazelwood (bass) has fit right in and shares a long-standing friendship with its members. Lorraine O’Reilly, known for her gorgeous, rasping, powerhouse vocals, comes from the Irish town of Cavan. She met Crowe while recording a duet for the Bible Code Sundays album *Walk like Kings*; they became friends and have performed together since 2017.
“There is an attitude about this band. It’s got a groove. We do a lot of story songs, but we also know we are here to blow out cobwebs and give the audience a good night. “I love playing in pubs. It’s what I did growing up. Even though my day job has a huge claim on my time, I’ve never not played music. My journey to film starts by playing in bands, touring around, releasing records. The band work led to musical theatre, … and miraculously a film director saw me performing in “Blood Brothers” and asked me to an audition.”
The rest, as they say, is history. Some 40+ international awards later, including BAFTAs, SAG, Academy Award, Golden Globes, and countless great films, Crowe still keeps his love for the immediacy of a live performance.
