Russ Varnell & His Too Country Band
Russ Varnell & His Too Country Band have been bringing the spirit and soul of Country music to fans across North Carolina and the country for over sixteen years now. Currently based in the Wilmington area their reputation extends far and wide.
Not too long ago, they were in Nashville at the Texas Troubadour Theatre hosting the World Famous Ernest Tubb Midnight Jamboree, a 72 year-old tradition currently on WSM Radio! Video courtesy of the Ernest Tubb Midnight Jamboree. The live performance starts at the 6:20 mark: https://www.facebook.com/ernesttubbrecordshops/videos/377103106550934/
Russ Varnell was born and raised all his life in Black Creek NC. "My parents raised me up listening to 100% hardcore traditional country music watching HEE HAW and the Porter Wagoner Show on TV and listening to the Grand Ole Opry on the radio". Give thanks to his parents who did their best to get it to come in clear enough on their old home clock radio.
Check this video out for a classic NC introduction:

George Jones, Merle Haggard, Elvis, Hank Sr., Ernest Tubb, Del Reeves, Don Rich, and Red Simpson are the inspiration for this fine band. The most important influence was the legendary Buck Owens who took Russ under his wing at an early age. Russ followed his heart and bought a plane ticket to Bakersfield to see his idol and hero Buck Owens, and was honored to perform for Buck's birthday party and follow up with the legendary Buckaroos for several gigs afterwards.
"I'm 100% a traditional real country singer" says Russ. "Nothing makes me more upset and let down than when I see and hear singers in our industry who claim to be country and then watch them sound like a rock or anything but a country singer! I sometimes think that my generation doesn't even know what a country singer supposed to sound like."
