Of all the eras of church history, some might argue that today’s Church has more theological knowledge and understanding than any other generation. And with artificial intelligence (AI) on the rise, that’s a fair assertion, but is that really the case?
As impressive as it may be, AI and all of its computing power pale in comparison to the incredible educational feats of the Jewish scholars during the first century AD. During this time, it was customary for the leaders of the Church to memorize the entire Torah, and most Jewish boys would begin their study of the Torah at the age of five or six. While many students of scripture relied on the Greek Septuagint for their studies, the top students were often fluent readers of Hebrew and Aramaic.
Put another way, the Bible students of Jesus’ time didn’t need Google or ChatGPT to find answers to their Bible questions – they knew it by heart. And yet, with all of this scriptural knowledge, Jesus once rebuked them, saying, “You do not have His word abiding in you, because whom He sent, Him you do not believe. You search the Scriptures, for in them you think you have eternal life; and these are they which testify of Me.” Many had created an idol out of their knowledge or “truth.”
Throughout the ages, the Church (i.e., Professed followers of God) has waxed and waned because of various distractions or idols. Whether legalism, majoring on minors, tradition, hate, us vs. them, or self-focus, anything that impedes your relationship with God will always impede His mission. Someone once said, “The church is the repository of the riches of the grace of Christ; and through the church will eventually be made manifest, even to ‘the principalities and powers in heavenly places,’ the final and full display of the love of God.” If that is true, we must clear the table of anything that impedes that mission.
Join us as we rediscover the true purpose of the Church and how our response to our call as believers either impedes God’s mission or expands His Kingdom.
