Thursdays 7pm to 7:45pm
Fountain Square
Salsa Rueda dancing.
Going to try a different approach this year....
Dancing rueda at SOTS can be difficult. Searching the crowd for those dancers. Finding dancers all at the same level. Creating space within the crowd to dance a rueda. Noise level generated by the crowd combined with musicians.
The ideal time to dance rueda is before the 1st lesson, between 7pm and 7:45pm. After 7:45, the square is occupied by a lesson and the attendance dramatically increases. Let's make an effort to show up before 7pm so that we can take advantage of the smaller crowd and create more opportunity to effectively dance rueda.
Rueda Etiquette Tips:
1. Make sure you and also your partner know what style of rueda is being danced before joining a group. Remember that you may know the calls, but the partner you intend to join with, might not know the calls. Watch to see what calls are being called. If the rueda has already started, it might be better to start an additional rueda formation. Make eye contact with the caller so that they can tell you what style they are calling and motion you to join if appropriate.
2. Callers should make it clear to others what style of rueda they want to call before soliciting dancers for the next song.
3. If the SOTS crowd is large, limit the rueda size. If the rueda grows to 8 couples consider breaking into 2 separate ruedas or consider a circle inside a circle with either llanta formation or non-llanta formation.
4. If your current partner can't hear the call, repeat what you heard to them.
5. If you don't know the move or couldn't hear the call through the noise, just continue dancing "guapea" until the next call is made or you see others start to switch partners. If you continue to dance guapea you can pay attention to when/if others that heard the move start to change partners so that you can do the same without disrupting the flow.
6. Don't take it personally if you are told not to join for that song. We want to be as inclusive as possibly because inclusiveness is an important part of social dance culture, but if you don't know the calls for that particular formation, then it will be too disruptive.
Some types of rueda that you need to be aware of so that you can choose to participate or not depending on your current knowledge level:
Beginner rueda: everyone that knows basic calls like dame,
enchufla, adios, directo, is welcome to join. There is no
disruption when couples are added.
Intermediate rueda: dancers should know moves that require
traveling so that you don't disrupt the flow of the rueda
if you are not familiar with "saloneo" or "caminila la rueda"
or "cadena" or caja de bolas
Rueda Pequena:
A 2 couple rueda, this size rueda is good for "puente" calls.
Rueda Echo, contrario, mixta:
requires even couples. Adding a single couple instead of 2
2 couples will disrupt the calling.
Rueda Infinita:
requires exactly 6 couples. Adding more will disrupt it.
Switch Rueda:
All dancers must know how to lead & follow.
Rueda LLANTA: Must know "Grande" vs "Pequeña" calls.
i.e. dame grande vs dame pequeña" etc.
Rueda TORNO: Must know torno transition calls (enchufa
torno, enchufa flip, etc.)

Disclaimer.... This is NOT endorsed by SOTS. This is NOT a class. This is not an "official" event. It is a coordination attempt to get those interested in dancing salsa rueda at salsa on the square all on the same page.
