RSA Mission Discussion on “Design for Life”

Fellows and Guests are warmly bidden to attend. The purpose of this meeting is to allow Fellows a second chance - and there will of course be others - to discuss the Society’s recent mission document “Design for Life”. The event also affords Fellows a chance to network a little now we are emerging from the pandemic. Potential Fellows are particularly welcome to attend.

The panel of speakers have diverse backgrounds and are:

Ruthanne Baxter FRSA, is Civic Engagement Manager for the University of Edinburgh Heritage Collections, and creator of Prescribe Culture, a heritage-based non-clinical initiative for health, social care and wellbeing, which recently won the Tech4Good Arts & Culture Award 2021. Ruthanne is currently Co-Investigator on a UKRI research project, ‘Prescribe Heritage Highland’, in partnership with the University of Highland and Islands School of Rural Health. She has co-authored a Student Mental Health Literacy course, with Prof Anne Duffy, at Queen’s University, Canada, and provides consultancy on developing heritage-based early interventions and social prescribing, nationally and internationally. Additionally, Ruthanne is a member of the Edinburgh Futures Institute Student Mental Health Research Cluster and sits on the Scottish Social Prescribing Network Steering Group.

John Ennis FRSA is a Fellow keen to examine the issues around the juxtaposition of culture, design and heritage alongside those of renewal and regeneration. He previously practised for some years as a GP in Edinburgh.

Lesley Martin FRSA had a career as a senior planning and economic strategy manager in local government. Lesley now works and studies independently as a consultant, visiting lecturer, doctoral student and volunteer. As a former RSA Fellowship Councillor, Lesley supported the Inclusive Growth Commission's work in Scotland and remains connected to the RSA and to organisations promoting new economic thinking, sustainability and citizen participation. She is a qualified town planner, and has taken up various voluntary roles in the RTPI and PAS (formerly Planning Aid for Scotland) including positions on the “RTPI Scottish Executive” and the PAS Policy Group. She is a supporter of the arts, and Friend of the EIF.

Tea, coffee and biscuits will be available, and prior registration is requested with a reminder that Covid protocols remain with us. St Vincent’s is accessible and is served by bus routes 24, 29 and 42 via Howe Street. Buses 23 and 27 go down Dundas Street, which is parallel to Howe Street and is only 150 yards or so from this historic Chapel.

Taking part in RSA in-person events

To participate in the event, you will need to register for a ticket so we can make sure we have an up-to-date list of those who plan on attending. This is for capacity purposes. We request that all attendees evaluate their own health and that of those they’re in close contact with. We encourage all attendees that are ill or showing symptoms of illness to stay home and to cancel your Eventbrite ticket if you are no longer able to join the event.
