Royal Artillery (Le Cateau) and Cavalry Barracks Tour 2026
About this Event
The tour starts with a short presentation on the history and layout of both barracks using the large map located on the south fence of Roman Circus House.
Next, visit the bronze sensory monument that the Colchester Military Heritage Group constructed, located opposite the Roman Circus Visitor Centre car park entrance. Using the frieze which goes around the monument, learn how XIV Brigade Royal Field Artillery left the barracks on18 August 1914 for France to take part in the Great War.
Then take a walk around the historic Grade 2 and locally listed surviving building of Cavalry and Le Cateau Barracks. It will be an opportunity for those attending to learn how the barracks functioned, where and how the officers, men and their horses were accommodated and events their famous regiments took part in, including the Battle of Le Cateau and the Charge of the Light Brigade.
