STUDIO BABOUN is proud to present Roy Clement’s second solo exhibition, Kout Kreyon Lwa Yo, opening on October 4th, 2024. This new collection features a series of illustrations, inspired by the Haitian Vodou spirits, or Lwas. Clement’s work offers an Afrocentric reimagining of the Lwas, moving away from the prevalent association with Catholic saints and instead exploring their representation through a distinctly Haitian lens, free from colonial influence.
In this exhibition, the Lwas' identities are brought to life through their traditional colors and Veves (sacred symbols), which are intricately woven into each piece, allowing viewers to connect more deeply with the spirits and their significance. This body of work is a celebration of Vodou, a cornerstone of Haitian culture and history, rich with meaning and inherited across generations.
Through Kout Kreyon Lwa Yo, Clement seeks to bridge the gap that has emerged over time between Haitians and Vodou, encouraging a reconnection with these spiritual figures. The series aims to destigmatize the Lwas, offering a deeper understanding of who they are and what they represent to the Haitian people. This exhibition stands as a tribute to Haiti’s cultural heritage, inviting the community to reclaim and embrace a fundamental part of their identity.
