Humor, A Common Language in a Politically Divided Family, with artist Eileen Maxson


Can families laugh through (some of) the pain in politics? Join and participate in a roundtable with artist Eileen Maxson and her parents as they share insights and anecdotes from the making of her video installation Parent Trap. Space is limited; reserve your spot today!


As part of CADD's Gallery Day, this event is organized in conjunction with Eileen Maxson's solo exhibition at Keijsers Koning, on view from August 24-September 28, and created in partnership with Braver Angels of North Texas. Dr. Mónica Salazar, art historian and esteemed faculty member at the University of North Texas, will co-moderate the discussion with Braver Angels.

About the speakers


's recent videos are experimental dialogues with her aging parents that delve into 'kitchen table' issues, ranging from overconsumption and climate change to political polarization. In these conversations and across her interdisciplinary practice, she uses humor and play as integral tools for connecting and navigating their differences. Exhibition highlights of her work include Wexner Center for the Arts; Queens Museum of Art; and the Museum of Moving Image. Maxson received her BFA from University of Houston, her MFA from Carnegie Mellon University, and attended De Ateliers, a post-graduate institute in Amsterdam, NL.
is a senior lecturer in art history at the University of North Texas. Her research and writing focus on contemporary Mexican art, conceptual art in Latin America, and death and migration in contemporary art, and her teaching includes photography, conceptual art, and postmodernism. Salazar received a Ph.D. in aesthetic studies from the University of Texas at Dallas. She earned a Master’s degree in Liberal Arts with a concentration in Fine Arts from Southern Methodist University and a Bachelor’s degree in Architecture from Instituto Tecnológico y de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey, Monterrey, Nuevo León, Mexico.
