About this Event

We're looking to share experiences, resources and to celebrate and engage with the new accessible version of The Illustrated Freelancer’s Guide. We’ll be joined by creators of The Illustrated Freelancer's Guide – writer Heather Parry and illustrator Maria Stoian – and Edinburgh based director and writer Jen McGregor.

We've partnered with Artlink and Birds of Paradise to help make this event as accessible as possible and have invited a freelance accessibility consultant to join us. Please let us know your access needs at registration so we can best support you. This event is wheelchair accessible and will have interpreting services available.

There will be tea, coffee and nibbles served during the event.

Prefer to join us online? No problem! This event will also be run online as we stream the panel discussion through Zoom and take your questions/comments through the chat function.

The event is hosted by Creative Edinburgh in partnership with Creative Scotland, Artlink and Birds of Paradise.

10:05 - Presentation from the writer and illustrator of The Illustrated Freelancer's Guide - Heather Parry & Maria Stoian

The Illustrated Freelancer's Guide's accessible versions were designed and published in April 2022 and we are keen to help promote them to a wide audience. This brilliant, practical resource for artists, makers, writers and other creatives working freelance in Scotland today has been gaining a lot of attention and generating important discussions.

The Illustrated Freelancer's Guide was created to fill an information gap for freelancers to better understand their rights, and find useful guidance and practical solutions. We're keen to help unpick its content, offer a chance to meet its creators, listen to feedback and learn from the process.

Roundtable

Roundtable: Dismantling Obstacles is the first event in our new Creative Edinburgh event series. The series aims to create a space to gather around the ‘freelance table’ and discuss challenges faced by creatives and offer a chance to share thoughts, ideas and recommendations. Future topics will include fair work, inclusion and accessibility.

How are we making sure this event is accessible?

CodeBase Edinburgh's Events Space is fully accessible to wheelchair users via the main entrance on Castle Terrace (37a Castle Terrace, Edinburgh EH1 2EL).

If you have other access requirements, please let us know during registration or get in touch with us directly, and we will do our very best to help.

CodeBase is situated in the heart of Edinburgh city which means there are several ways you can reach the venue. It is a 4-minute walk from the closest bus stop on Lothian Road and a 10-minute walk from the West End tram stop.

There is also an NCP car park situated right infront of the venue on Castle Terrace.

There is level access into the venue from Castle Terrace, with automatic double doors upon entering, and an accessible toilet inside the building. There is a lowered desk at reception. The entrance has "CodeBase" written in large type across the automatic doors.

Read more about the accessibility of the venue on Euan's Guide here.

During the event:

A hearing loop is accessible to anyone who requires it and there will be BSL interpreters online and cast on screen in the room.

Speakers will be using a microphone but volumes will be kept at a reasonable level. There will be no amplified music or any bright lights used throughout the event. Speakers will also give a brief description of their physical appearance to help audiences who will be joining us online.
