This workshop will start with a classroom session going over some of the basics of bird monitoring. Following this we'll put these skills to practice with a field session, helping Rotokare kick off our hihi monitoring for the year. This involves walking our monitoring lines, stopping and listening for hihi, and recording any hihi you find. We're hoping to identify as many of the banded birds as possible.
Sharp eyes, and a keen ear for birds will be needed for this, but most people can learn to do these surveys with a bit of training under their belt. These surveys are a great opportunity to develop your bird skills and get to know this species better :)
If you are interested, please get in touch.
You will need to bring:
Usual field gear for a day in the forest - good footwear (terrain is steep and slippery!) & warm waterproof clothing (that you don't mind getting dirty) are ESSENTIAL
Snacks and water.
A time keeping device – watch or phone etc
Good binoculars if you have them. Limited spares available
The track can be steep, wet and slippery so a reasonable level of fitness is required.
Hope to see you then!
