This program celebrates artistic and musical interaction between Japan and France from the 19th century to the present day. A few works in the program also feature animals as their subject matter—birds in Messiaen and Yamanaka, goldfish in Debussy, raccoon dog in Koide and deer in Morita. All works display colorful timbral varieties with individual styles and expressions, as in Taku’s exploration of jazz idioms and Morita’s use of a Japanese rhythm called jo-ha-kyū. The program concludes with Franck’s monumental work that inspired many Japanese composers.
CU Boulder College of Music welcomes professional musicians from around the world in its series of guest artist recitals. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime chance for audiences to experience expert-level performances of dynamic works for free.
