Wally Callerio– Producer. DJ. Lifelong Student of the Groove.
To be a successful house music producer, you’ve got to make tracks DJs want to play. And to be a great DJ, you’ve got to play records that make people move. Simple in theory — brutal in execution.
Wally Callerio has mastered both sides of that equation. For over three decades, his instinct for what moves a dancefloor and his deep respect for the craft have made him one of the most consistent and respected names in underground house.
With more than 30 years behind the decks and in the studio, Callerio has produced and remixed over 300 tracks across 50+ labels worldwide — including iconic imprints like Defected, Cajual, Farris Wheel Recordings, Grin Music, and Sampled Recordings. His sound blends soul, swing, and Chicago grit — always delivered with the unmistakable warmth that defines his legacy.
Beyond the booth, Callerio’s creativity extends into film. As Music Supervisor for Unconscious Therapy (2016), the acclaimed documentary chronicling the rise of house music through the eyes of Frankie Knuckles and his peers, he curated and licensed the film’s influential soundtrack — while also appearing alongside legends like Mark Farina, Derrick Carter, and Masters at Work.
Under his alter ego Poncho Warwick, Callerio continues to evolve his sound, proving that house music isn’t just something he makes — it’s something.
Dufflebag Recordings
Los Angeles, Calif.
When Los Angeles-based Dufflebag Recordings debuted in the fall of 1997, founder and A&R Wally Callerio set out to tell a story through house music. Rooted in the soulful house sounds of the era, Dufflebag’s catalog resonated with the mood of the times: deep, funky, and jazzy, blending soulful vocals with gritty basslines to craft a smooth yet impactful dance floor vibe.
Now, more than 15 years later, as house music continues to evolve, Dufflebag Recordings evolves alongside it, staying true to its earthy, vocal-driven roots while captivating a new generation of dance music enthusiasts. From the start, the label garnered critical acclaim with Callerio’s defining releases like “Déjà vu/Whispers” and “In Your Arms/Thisgo,” which set the tone for its creative direction. The label’s momentum only grew, with contributions from underground house heavyweights like Demarkus Lewis, Poncho Warwick, Alysha Kid, Robb Swinga, Ryan Truman, and many more.
While Dufflebag initially built its reputation on standout vinyl releases—26 in total—Callerio eventually transitioned to digital formats, expanding the label’s reach. Today, Dufflebag boasts 100s original tracks, with its momentum still building.
The hallmark of Dufflebag’s sound remains its dedication to full, soulful vocals, standing apart from the sample-heavy grooves that can sometimes homogenize the genre. Callerio envisions music as a living, timeless beat—not a disposable trend—a vision he continues to pursue as the label grows.
