Rosalia Scalia: UNDER THE RADAR (with Susan Muaddi Darraj)

Bird in Hand is delighted to celebrate the launch of Rosalia Scalia's second short story collection, Under the Radar! This heartfelt collection offers a poignant look at characters grappling with grief and loss in various forms, with a focus on their struggles to find resilience in the face of such loss.
Susan Muaddi Darraj, author of Behind You Is the Sea and many other books for adults and children, will join Rosalia Scalia in conversation. We're delighted that this conversation will take place between two pillars of the Baltimore writing community, and we hope you can join us for this special evening.

Rosalia Scalia is the author of the story collection, Stumbling Toward Grace (Unsolicited Press 2021) and a second collection, Under the Radar, forthcoming from Unsolicited Press in January 2025. She has published in numerous literary journals. She holds an M.A. in writing from Johns Hopkins University and is a Maryland State Arts Council Independent Artist’s Award recipient. She won the Editor’s Select award from Willow Review and the Gary Wilson Short Fiction Award from descant literary magazine. Her fiction has also been nominated for the Pushcart Prize. Susan Muaddi Darraj is an award-winning writer of books for adults and children. She won an American Book Award, two Arab American Book Awards, and a Maryland State Arts Council Independent Artists Award. In 2018, she was named a USA Artists Ford Fellow. Her books include her linked short story collection, A Curious Land, as well as the Farah Rocks children’s book series. She lives in Baltimore, where she teaches creative writing at Harford Community College and the Johns Hopkins University. Her new novel, BEHIND YOU IS THE SEA, was published in January 2024 by HarperVia. It received praise from The New York Times, The San Francisco Chronicle, and Ms Magazine, and it was named a Best Book of 2024 by The New Yorker and Apple Books.
