“Roots” is a musical journey through the history of Hindustani classical music, narrated by the Tanpura, a timeless instrument that has witnessed its evolution for centuries. The play explores the origins of Indian music, its deep connections to historical texts like the Natya Shastra, and its transformation through Mughal and Western influences.Blending storytelling with live performances, Roots features compositions curated and composed by Shanjeet or Shruti Teeluck, alongside moments of improvisation that show the spontaneity of Hindustani classical music. The production also showcases tabla performance and solos by Ravi Rugbeer and lastly, a special guest performance by Manishka Bhogal, who will play Chopin’s Nocturne in C-sharp Minor, Op. Posth. (No. 20), illustrating the cross-cultural influences on musical traditions.
The second half of the production transitions into a ghazal mehfil, celebrating the beauty of poetic expression and melody.
