Roots of American Music continues its new Masters of American Music series—an ongoing concert and storytelling experience celebrating the artists who shaped the foundations of American music.
Held on the fourth Wednesday of each month, the series brings audiences into an intimate setting where music and storytelling come together, connecting listeners more deeply to the history behind the songs.
For the July program in this series, David Mayfield will perform the music of Bill Monroe.
Widely known as the "Father of Bluegrass," Bill Monroe forever changed the landscape of American music through his virtuosic mandolin playing, unmistakable high-lonesome sound, and pioneering vision. With classics like "Blue Moon of Kentucky," "Uncle Pen," and "Kentucky Waltz," Monroe established bluegrass as a distinctly American art form, influencing generations of musicians across country, folk, rock, and beyond.
David Mayfield is one of Northeast Ohio's most celebrated roots musicians, known for his dynamic performances, exceptional musicianship, and deep connection to the traditions of bluegrass and old-time music. Having spent years immersed in the music that Bill Monroe helped create, Mayfield brings both authenticity and his own unmistakable energy to these timeless songs.
Through performance and storytelling, David will explore Monroe's enduring legacy and the lasting impact bluegrass continues to have on American music. Audiences will hear the stories behind the songs, discover the innovations that defined a genre, and gain a deeper appreciation for an artist whose influence still echoes throughout today's musical landscape.
More than a tribute concert, this evening offers an opportunity to experience the roots of bluegrass through one of its finest contemporary interpreters while celebrating the rich traditions that continue to inspire new generations of musicians.

Proceeds from the event support the mission of Roots of American Music, which educates, inspires, and connects communities across Northeast Ohio through live performances and arts-integrated music education programs in schools, senior centers, and community spaces.
