Roots & Rhythm: Shakuhachi & Ghatam in Dialogue
About this Event
An Exploration of Japanese, Indian, Latin & Jazz Fusion
More than twenty years after their last performance together in Manila, acclaimed shakuhachi artist John Kaizan Neptune and Grammy Award-winning ghatam virtuoso Giridhar Udupa reunite on stage for the first time—and for their first-ever performance together in the United States.
Joined by David Neptune (Takeda bamboo percussion), Christophe Ambrosini (guitar), and Spencer Hinkle (bass), the ensemble explores original music shaped by Japanese melodies, South Indian rhythm, Latin influences, jazz improvisation, and musical traditions from around the world.
Across a rare 90-minute performance, the musicians create a sound that is intimate, adventurous, and deeply immersive. Each concert unfolds as a living conversation where breath, rhythm, melody, and improvisation meet in the moment.
More than a concert, Roots & Rhythm celebrates artistic friendship, creative exchange, and the power of music to connect people across cultures and generations.
Your presence helps sustain independent live music and meaningful artistic collaboration. We are deeply grateful to the patrons, supporters, and community members helping bring this experience to life.
