This free event will allow eventgoers to see fish up close and personal with guided tours and fish spawning demonstrations. Visitors can learn about Lake Michigan fishing methods, try their hand at casting fly rods, catch a backyard bass or learn how to tie flies.
Thanks to partnerships with Salmon Unlimited, Trout Unlimited and the Milwaukee Great Lakes Sport Fishermen, there will be educational fishing stations and a Touch of the Wild education trailer on-site, offering a great opportunity for attendees to get a hands-on connection with nature.
The Root River Steelhead Facility was built in the early 90s to help the DNR more effectively manage Lake Michigan’s trout and salmon fishery. Each spring and fall, migrating Chinook and coho salmon and rainbow trout (steelhead) enter the streams for their annual spawning ritual. The DNR uses the RRSF to capture these fish for collecting eggs to raise at our hatcheries and allows DNR biologists to collect biological information on a large number of fish passing through this facility. Data relating to the overall health of the fish, growth rates, migration patterns and other important information are collected to help us learn more about the fishery.
