Room Cycle presents an evening of percussive focussed live electronic experiments from London’s Church Andrews & Matt Davies, performing live together for the first time in Manchester. Support comes from Contours Live. Both artists live show’s explore approaches to rhythmic interplay and percussive experimentation incorporating dubbed out sonics and shifting polyrhythms.
Church Andrews & Matt Davies showcase a mutually informed conversation between live electronics and analogue percussion, in which Andrews’ synth sounds and Davies’ drum performances each act as a trigger to the other. The results are a series of sonic organisms, semi-mechanical ecosystems that click and whirr with subtle, shifting focuses. This ecosystem roots itself in jazz, dub techno, hip-hop and minimalist music, as heard in percussively elusive, at times almost arrhythmic loops; playful takes on negative space; and interchangeable emphases on melody and frequency range.
Contours new live set explores the percussive focused sound palette that the artist has honed since his debut release on Rhythm Section in 2015. The live material draws heavily on the minimalist, ambient and tuned percussion led compositions of his 2020 album, Balafon Sketches.
Contours merges delay-soaked balafon and homemade instrumentation with polyrhythmic drum machine programming and interlocking synth lines. This rhythmic propulsion is underpinned by luscious dubbed out strings and sub heavy pressure, all of which combine to take the listener on a rich sonic journey.
