About the Programme:

There’s a new buzzword in publishing: Romantasy. Is it more romance and spice than conventional fantasy? Is it a taster for the fantasy genre for new readers? Will this "$610 million business", as reported by Bloomberg, continue to skyrocket or is this a slow burn romance destined to end in consumer fatigue?

Join us as we discuss the popularity of works such as Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros and A Court of Thorns and Roses series by Sarah J. Maas, fun or questionable tropes, and the gripes of fantasy writers and readers.

About the Speakers:

Amber Chen (speaker)

Amber Chen is the UK #1 bestselling author of the YA silkpunk fantasy novel, Of Jade and Dragons. She is currently based in sweltering Singapore and spends much of her free time living within Chinese fantasy novels and dramas. She also drinks one too many cups of bubble tea. One of her webnovels, The Cutting Edge, has been adapted for television.

Amy Leow (speaker)

Amy Leow is the author of The Scarlet Throne (forthcoming Sep 10, Orbit Books). Currently residing in Kuala Lumpur, she graduated with a degree in linguistics and is currently pursuing a PhD in the same subject. She is often found dreaming up worlds of feral gods and even more feral girls.

Siew Ling (moderator)

Siew Ling is one half of the team behind local online bookstore, Wormhole. She also doubles up as a freelance copywriter to fund her compulsive need to buy books, pasta, and anything dog-themed.

“Worth the Hype?” is a literary arts series that spotlights popular works of contemporary world fiction and asks the titular question: are they worth the hype? Each session will centre on bestselling works of literary fiction where the panel will discuss the literary merits and commercial appeal of a chosen book.
