Roller Derby Boot Camp: A Four-Day ImmersionExperience the Thrill of Roller Derby, Supported by Waco Roller Derby!
Are you ready to lace up your skates and hit the track? Our four-day roller derby boot camp is designed to introduce you to the fast-paced, exhilarating world of roller derby. Whether you're a beginner or have some skating experience, this intensive program will equip you with the essential skills to become a confident and skilled roller derby player. Open to ages 7 and up, and fun for the whole family. Learn from experienced players and coaches from Waco Roller Derby and surrounding derby leagues, all the skills necessary to participate in Juniors and Adult level roller derby.
What to Expect:
Comprehensive Skill Development: Learn the fundamental techniques of roller derby, including skating, stopping, turning, falling, and getting up safely. Our experienced coaches will guide you through each step, ensuring you have a solid foundation.
Strategic Play: Understand the rules, tactics, and strategies that govern roller derby matches. Learn how to work as a team, communicate effectively, and execute plays with precision.
Physical Conditioning: Enhance your strength, endurance, and agility through customized workouts designed for roller derby. Our coaches will help you develop the physical fitness necessary to excel on the track.
Protective Gear: We have a limited supply of the necessary protective gear, including helmets, pads, and skates, so please bring your own if you have any. Mouth guards are recommended during training, and will be required if we do any contact training, which can be purchased at the skate shop at the rink.
Supportive Community: Join a vibrant and inclusive community of roller derby enthusiasts. Make new friends, share your passion, and experience the camaraderie that makes roller derby so special.
Who Can Participate:
Our boot camp is open to anyone, ages 7 and up and for all genders. Whether you're a seasoned skater or new to the sport, we welcome all levels of experience. We do ask that you have the basic skating skills needed to start skating on day one. This course is geared towards those who are confident on wheels but looking to learn more advanced skills and how to play in the fast paced game of roller derby. Skate Waco offers multiple kids skate camps throughout the year at both of their locations, as well as provides all ages skate lessons on Saturday afternoons at both rinks, and adult only skate lessons on Thursday evenings at the Waco location.
When:
Every Saturday in October (5th, 12th, 19th and 26th) starting at 10am. Please arrive by 9:45 to check in and be geared up by 10am (unless coach has us doing off skates training first). Expect training to last for approximately 2 hours, but could run a little past noon depending on how many skaters we have and when separating juniors and adults. On the 19th, Waco Roller Derby invites all participants to view their themed mash-up game at 8am so you can see a how a real live-action roller derby bout is played!
Day One - October 5th: Introduction to roller derby, game basics, rules, penalties, etc. On the track skills training; stops, skating the diamond with crossovers, backwards with speed, foot work, endurance.
Day Two - October 12th: Blocking and pack formation, how to hold the jammer, defensive plays and maneuvering as a pack.
Day Three - October 19th: Jamming and juking, speed and agility to make points, finding holes in the pack, passing the star, offensive plays and getting your jammer through to victory.
Day Four - October 26th: Putting it all together, scrimmaging with light contact, learn plays and strategies. After action review to discuss all the skills learned and talk next steps in forming Waco's first junior level team, and recruitment to adult team.
What you get:
This four day boot camp is priced at $100 to give you 8 to 10 hours of training (depending on how long we run each Saturday) led by experienced coaches and players of Waco Roller Derby, and hopefully some guest coaches from our surrounding area. Participation in the boot camp gives you an "Inside Edge" membership for the whole month of October that gives you access to any public skating session at both Skate Waco locations and a 15% discount on skates and gear at the skate shop. We tried to keep the cost as low as possible in order to pay for blocking off party time from Skate Country, but if we get more than twenty (20) participants then we may be able to add free custom reversible jerseys with your derby name and number on it for all participants.
Where:
All boot camp classes will be at Skate Country in Bellmead at 500 N. Loop 340. Each Saturday morning of October at 10am.
