Teri Roiger: Vocalist & Composer An American jazz musician, vocalist, pianist, songwriter, educator, and producer, Teri lives in New York City and also spends time in New York’s Hudson Valley. She began playing piano at age 5, and played church organ throughout her teens. When she discovered jazz in her early 20s – and soon after made her first demo with the legendary stride pianist, Butch Thompson – her musical path was set.

One afternoon in Minneapolis, a young Teri Roiger sat down at a piano amidst a group of seasoned musicians and played a burning rendition of John Coltrane’s Giant Steps. An astounded nearby bass player said, "Hey, you aren't supposed to be able to do that," a remark that ignited Teri’s determination to pursue a life in jazz.

After years of “doing that,” Teri feels her latest recording is her most personal and powerful to date. 2017 brings Teri’s fourth release as a bandleader – GHOST OF YESTERDAY: Shades of Lady Day -- a heartfelt tribute to Billie Holiday, to coincide with Lady Day's 102nd birth year.

Noting that Ms. Holiday provided the initial spark that led to a lifelong commitment to jazz, Teri says, “This recording brings me full circle. I was immediately moved upon first hearing Holiday’s recordings. I felt all kinds of emotions I didn’t know how to express; emotions I hadn’t felt before, and it awakened something in me that I treasure. This tribute is something I've wanted to do since I began singing Billie Holiday’s music in my 20’s. In spite of her challenges, Billie was able to persevere and make incredible music that was filled not only with sorrow but also with joy. I’m in awe of that ability.” On this multi-dimensional project, Roiger celebrates and honors Lady Day’s legacy by showing the many facets of Billie – her ebullient joy, her rebellious spirit, her rich sensuality, and the depth of her blues. In addition to recording re-imagined versions of Billie classics, Roiger also includes some interesting songs inspired by Billie, one of which appears here on disc for the first time with Teri’s original lyrics, as well as the Gil Scott-Heron classic Lady Day and John Coltrane.

Teri has performed throughout the U.S., Canada, Mexico, and Europe, and has been a featured artist at the San Miguel Jazz Festival, Panama Jazz Festival, and Bolzano Jazz Festival. The depth of her experiences and love of jazz is apparent when she brings all of her talents to bear in her live performances, the recording studio, and through her moving lyrics and compositions.

Roiger’s original offerings to GHOST OF YESTERDAY are lyrics to Lady Day penned by Roiger, along with her lyrics to the melodies of two of Lester Young's solos, which reflect her empathetic embrace of the music, while exploring Holiday’s intriguing musical relationship with Young. She also added lyrics to an Ella Fitzgerald solo which appears on the track Them There Eyes. Holiday aficionados will recognize that Roiger pays special tribute to Lady In Satin, one of Billie’s most hauntingly heartfelt albums, with new and beautiful arrangements of You Don’t Know What Love Is and It’s Easy To Remember.

The depth of musicianship on GHOST OF YESTERDAY is a testament to Roiger and producer John Menegon’s sophistication as arrangers, and to each musician’s unique contribution to shaping and propelling the music to a world-class standard. The personnel includes some of the most highly respected and accomplished musicians on the scene today: John Menegon (Dewey Redman, David ‘Fathead” Newman, Joe Lovano), Wayne Hawkins (Karrin Allyson), Steve Williams (Shirley Horn, Carmen Lundy). special guests…the “Visitors”: Roswell Rudd (Archie Shepp, Cecil Taylor) Jay Collins (Gregg Allman, Jacky Terrasson), Steve Gorn (Paul Simon, Jack DeJohnette), Rebecca Coupe-Franks (Joe Henderson, Kenny Barron), Mark Dziuba (Jim Hall, Pat Metheny), Abdou Mboup (Joe Lovano, Michel Petrucciani).

Teri’s 2012 release, DEAR ABBEY: The Music of Abbey Lincoln, produced by Brian Bacchus, made the Jazz Journalist Association’s “best of” vocal releases list for 2012 and was featured as one of the five best tribute releases in NYC Jazz Record’s January 2013 issue. Teri’s acclaimed composition STILL LIFE, the title track of her second release (with Frank Kimbrough, Gil Goldstein, Matt Wilson, and John Menegon) won third prize in the jazz category of the International Songwriting Competition. On her debut CD, MISTERIOSO, Teri and her husband, John Menegon, collaborated to arrange and produce a collection of tunes featuring jazz legends Kenny Burrell and Jack DeJohnette. On that album, Teri’s original lyrics to Monk’s Misterioso (renamed Listen To Your Soul) were recorded with the blessing of the Thelonious Monk family.

Since 1998, Roiger has shared her knowledge and inspiration with her students in the SUNY New Paltz Jazz Program (New Paltz, NY), where she teaches Jazz Voice, History of Jazz, and Vocal Jazz Ensembles. Over a seven-year period, she also developed and presented four in-depth courses at Williams College (Williamstown, MA): The Music of Billy Strayhorn, The Music of Thelonious Monk, A Survey of Brazilian Music, and an extensive Vocal Jazz Ensemble Performance course.

Teri and John also composed and scored the music for the documentary film BEYOND ICONIC (2011) about the renowned photographer Dennis Stock. Directed by Hanna Sawka, this acclaimed film premiered at festivals all over the world and was one of the top ten finalists at the Sao Paulo Film Festival. In 2011 Roiger and Menegon formed a new production company called JAZZSTOCK, which has been very successful in presenting world-renowned jazz artists in Woodstock and throughout the Hudson Valley and continues to this day.

Praise for Roiger’s music and performances:

Jack DeJohnette, 2012 NEA Jazz Master and legendary jazz drummer: Teri has an intuitive laid back sense of time reminiscent of Abbey Lincoln & Betty Carter, but with her own uniqueness.

Stanley Crouch at DIZZY’s: Her notes, her swing, her sound, and the all-encompassing soulfulness of Teri giving meaning to the music and the moment said all there is to say. She had all of the essences that anyone wants to hear anytime from a true jazz singer…She is made for those who still understand the meaning of the term the real thing.

Vic Garbarini, Playboy Magazine: A voice like the finest bittersweet chocolate full of rich, dark, contradicting flavors that miraculously blend to create one of the most original vocal instruments in decades!

JAZZTIMES: Powerfully moving…sagacious warmth…impressively deep…

ALL ABOUT JAZZ: Roiger’s warm contralto, like aged, fine whiskey, is smooth but heady.

Mark Myers, JazzWax.com: A vocalist who wraps (Abbey) Lincoln’s complex songs around her finger…

Jeff "Siege" Siegel: Drummer Jeff, is a veteran of the New York Jazz Scene and has worked with a virtual "who's who" of artists.

A member of the Sir Roland Hanna Trio from 1994-'99, Siegel's diverse career has also allowed him to share the concert stage, recording studio - or both with legendary artists such as Ron Carter, Kenny Burrell, Jack DeJohnette, Benny Golson, Frank Foster, Shiela Jordan, Helen Merrill, Mose Allison and many more.

He has also performed and recorded with contemporaries such as Dave Douglas, Stefon Harris, Kurt Elling, Ravi Coltrane, Ryan Kisor, Steve Turre, Arthur Rhames, and John Esposito.

He has worked in the avant-garde world as well with Wadada Leo Smith, Baikida Carroll, and others.

Peter Levin: Keyboards / Piano In a diverse music career spanning several decades, keyboardist/arranger Pete Levin has performed and recorded with hundreds of Jazz and Pop artists - including Paul Simon, Annie Lennox, Miles Davis, David Sanborn, Lenny White, Wayne Shorter, Jaco Pastorius, Robbie Robertson, and John Scofield - receiving critical accolades for his work during a 15-year association with the legendary Gil Evans, and his 8-year stint with jazz icon Jimmy Giuffre.

Since the 70s, Pete has been part of New York's jazz, pop, and electronic music scene. In 1974 he got a call to play French horn with legendary jazz arranger Gil Evans, and Gil made him a regular. As an experiment, Pete brought a Moog synthesizer to an Evans gig. Gil loved it and Pete's role was permanently changed, beginning the transformation of the band into the electronic/acoustic hybrid sound that won 2 Grammy awards. Among the first to explore synthesizers during the 70s, Pete became a sought-after sideman for studio and live gigs. As an arranger and musician, he worked on dozens of film scores, hundreds of jazz and pop records, and countless TV and radio commercials. Over the years, interspersed with Gil Evans, Paul Simon, Annie Lennox, and Jimmy Giuffre tours, Pete has done arranging and electronic music for feature films including MISSING IN ACTION, THE COLOR OF MONEY, and STAR TREK. He composed the orchestral score for the independent film ZELIMO, composed an original music score for a stage production of THE DYBBUK, did the official band/chorus arrangement of the U.S. Infantry song, and composed the anthem for the 1992 United Nations Earth Summit, performing it in the U.N. General Assembly. But his favorite collaboration was “THE CLAMS” with his brother, bassist Tony Levin and drummer Steve Gadd, a Spike Jones tribute band that produced the top-40 hit single "CLOSE TO YOU" that’s now a cult classic.

In 1989 Pete released his first solo jazz album, "PARTY IN THE BASEMENT", for Gramavision Records. This was followed by "SOLITARY MAN", two unique jazz Christmas CDs with drummer Danny Gottlieb, and through the 90s, a series of electronic music albums for Alternate Mode Records. In 2006, Pete revisited his first love, the Hammond Organ, releasing 5 organ trio albums, beginning with "DEACON BLUES" for Motema, and culminating with “JUMP!” in 2010. In 2017, Pete recorded “MöBIUS,” a self-released album in coordination with IYouWe Records, bringing together a 7-piece all-star band.

In addition to touring with the Levin Brothers, a jazz quartet co-led by bassist Tony Levin, the MöBIUS band will begin touring in late 2017.

Between 1964 and 2017, Pete has recorded and/or performed live with artists and ensembles including …

Michael Allman, Aztec Two Step, Joe Beck, Jeff Berlin, Marc Black, Terrance Blanchard, Carla Bley, Blood Sweat & Tears, Broadside Brass Bed Band, Brubeck Brothers Quartet, Hiram Bullock, Butterfield Blues Band, Donald Byrd, Don Byron, Jay Chattaway, Tommy Chong, The Clams, John Clark, Jimmy Cobb, Judy Collins, Commander Cody, Gene Cornish, Albert Cummings, David Darling, Kal David, Bettye Davis, Miles Davis, Robbie Dupree, Don Elliott, Gil Evans, Fania All-Stars, Rachelle Farelle, Bryan Ferry, Letizia Gambi, Jimmy Giuffre, Leila Gobi, Government Mule, Gregory Hines, Freddie Hubbard, Kathy Ingraham, Howard Johnson, Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Band, Mamadou Kelly, Annie Lennox, Tony Levin, Levin Brothers, Rod MacDonald, Al MacDowell, Mike Mainieri, Melissa Manchester, Chuck Mangione, Liza Minnelli, Charles Mingus, Gerry Mulligan, Ola Onabule, Rob Paparozzi, Jaco Pastorius, Simon Phillips, Lorenza Ponce, Genya Ravan, Nicki Richards, Robbie Robertson, Teri Roiger, Ali Ryerson, David Sanborn, John Scofield, Wayne Shorter, Carly Simon, Paul Simon, Lew Soloff, Vaneese Thomas, John Tropea, Joe Lynn Turner, Michal Urbaniak, Jimmy Vivino, Joe Louis Walker, Jim Weider, Peter Welker, Lenny White & Vanessa Williams

John Menegon: Bass New York City bassist John Menegon started his career playing bass in Montreal. After having worked for several years on the Canadian jazz scene with the great guitarists' Sonny Greenwich, Mike Gauthier & Nelson Simons, and saxophonists Steve Grossman & Pat LaBarbara, he went on to hone his skills in NYC in the mid-80s. Since moving to New York to study Jazz at Long Island University on a full scholarship, John has performed/recorded with Dewey Redman, David “Fathead” Newman, Matt Wilson, Frank Kimbrough, John Hicks, Yoron Israel, Jack DeJohnette, Kenny Burrell, Joel Frahm, Pat Metheny, Kenny Barron, Paul Bley, Anthony Braxton's Tri-Centric Orchestra, Nick Brignola, Jimmy Cobb, Al Foster, Slide Hampton, Sheila Jordan, Lee Konitz, Joe Lovano, and many others. In addition to touring, recording, and composing, he has created and taught Jazz Workshops on the music of Jaco Pastorius, Miles Davis, and Charles Mingus at Williams College (Williamstown, MA). He has also taught master classes at Jazz Festivals around the world, including the Panama Jazz Festival, Bolzano, (Italy), and San Miguel de Allende.

Menegon's latest release "Blew By Blues" with his group "Quartet East" was released on Dot Time Records in 2017 and features John on bass, Joel Frahm on tenor/sop sax, Frank Kimbrough on piano, and Steve Williams on drums, with special guest vocalists Teri Roiger, Judi Silvano, Sarah James, and Maryanne de Prophetis.

His 2014 release "I Remember You" (Inner Circle Music) includes dedications to some of the musicians who have influenced him musically and creatively over the years. The CD features Menegon on bass and compositions, Tineke Postma on alto/soprano sax, Frank Kimbrough on piano, and Matt Wilson on drums, with special guest Teri Roiger on two vocals. This release received a four-star review in Downbeat (April 2014): "Canadian-bred John Menegon is in the line of George Mraz and Michael Moore; a harmonically sophisticated bassist with the technical facility who swings hard when it’s called for."

His recording "New Moon" is a reflection of his many years of love and dedication to the process of creating personal and engaging music that can help to propel positive energy in the world. The recording took place at Upland Studio, deep in the mountains of the Catskills in Upstate New York. The CD was recorded in two sessions: the first session included Harvey Sorgen and Bob Meyer, each playing their own drum kit, along with Jonathan Lorentz on alto sax, tenor sax, and wood flute, vocalist Teri Roiger, and John on bass. The concept going into the recording was to have all the musicians engage in creating a musical spectrum based on shapes that sometimes look like equations in regard to velocity, rhythm, and intensity. The musicians challenged each other with spontaneity, dynamic range, and self-expression. Included in the recording are two compositions that engage the spoken word: LOST IN TREBLE LAND is based on a poem I wrote while spending a month in Montreal (Canada) in the late summer of 2009. APOLOGY was composed around a poem written by Teri Roiger for the session. The second session included Michael Bocian on electric guitar, along with Jonathan Lorentz on tenor sax, Bob Meyer on drums, and John on bass. All these musicians have been inspirational, as they all work toward a common goal of creating music with spontaneity.

Menegon played on and arranged vocalist Teri Roiger’s two latest releases: "GHOST OF YESTERDAY: Shades of Lady Day" (Dot Time Records, 2017) and "DEAR ABBEY: The Music of Abbey Lincoln" (Inner Circle Music, 2012). Both have been released to great critical acclaim.

In 2005 John recorded SOUL ADVICE, a CD of original compositions written by the musicians in the band: Mark Dziuba (guitar), John Gunther (bass clarinet, tenor & soprano sax), Tani Tabbal (drums), and Menegon (bass). “This is a brilliant release full of rich composition and arrangement…when you have a strong well-rounded bassist like John Menegon composing, arranging, and laying down the serious low-end vibes, the music naturally flows out and around and back again seeking its root.” John Trent, Chronogram

In 2004 Menegon debuted as a leader on his CD SEARCHLIGHT. The CD is a selection of his original compositions and arrangements and features one of jazz's greatest living legends, Dewey Redman (sax), along with John Gunther (sax/flute), Mark Dziuba (guitar), Mark McLean (drums), Tani Tabbal (percussion) and Teri Roiger (voice). “John Menegon’s Search Light is witty, atmospheric, and thoroughly engaging from one end to the other. On Search Light, John Menegon shows, without self-indulgence, that the bass can define the character of an ensemble as clearly and fully as any other instrument. The entire project has a surefootedness, a quiet, elegant, muscularity that radiates from Mr. Menegon’s own playing, and that is immediately apparent and compelling. The band is made up entirely of accomplished players, the best-known being, in fact, saxophonist Dewey Redman, who is, once again, brilliant, and wonderful.” Steven Robinson, All About Jazz

In 2005 Menegon played at the Montreal Jazz Festival with Pat Metheny and Dewey Redman, performing music from Metheny’s CD 80/81. John also played at the Festival with the Dewey Redman Quartet featuring Matt Wilson on drums and Frank Kimbrough on piano, which was acclaimed by the critics as the best performance of the entire 2005 Festival: “MENEGON met the demands of the music with a combination of relaxed swing and more outward-looking freedom. His solos were the perfect confluence of rhythmic invention and melodic conception.” John Kelman, AllAboutJazz-New York

In 2011 Menegon composed and scored music for the critically acclaimed documentary BEYOND ICONIC about the legendary photographer Dennis Stock, directed by Hanna Sawka.

John built and operates a recording studio in Marbletown, NY, called UPLAND STUDIO.

In the summer of 2011, Menegon & Roiger created an ongoing Jazz Series in Woodstock called JAZZSTOCK, presenting local, national, and international musicians to audiences in the Hudson Valley. This series of concerts and workshops continue to this day. www.jazzstock.com
