About this Event
We know the weekend is right around the corner but if you don't have plan for Friday night, we've got a great suggestion!
The Restaurant Opportunities Center of New York invites you to join us on Friday, October 25, 2024, at the New York screening of La Cocina, a film about an undocumented immigrant working in the back-of-house of a Times Square restaurant.
This beautiful film explores the complicated dynamics between front-of-house and back-of-house workers, including a rare love affair, as it examines the intersections of a broken U.S. immigration system and the longstanding exploitation of restaurant workers within the pressure-cooker working environment.
A Q&A session will follow the screening with La Cocina actors along with a representative of ROC New York, and a current restaurant worker. It is your chance to delve deeper into the issues, including labor issues, within the hospitality industry.
All attendees must register through Eventbrite. *Please retrieve your paid ticket/s at the AMC 25 theater booth with your full name and ID before the screening starts. Thank you!
We look forward to seeing you there!
ABOUT THIS EVENT
The majority of restaurant workers are women, nearly half are workers of color, and nearly a quarter are immigrants. They are the backbone of our food system: they plant, pick, chop, cook, serve, and deliver our food. However, they are disproportionately subjected to long hours with subminimum wages as low as $2.13 per hour and work in unpleasant working conditions. About 35 percent of restaurant workers rely on public assistance, and nearly 45 percent live below twice the federal poverty line, barely making ends meet. This is a pressing issue that requires our immediate attention and action.
Undocumented immigrants working in the restaurant industry are cut out of benefits and must fend for themselves, with little to no work protections, such as paid leave and quality healthcare. La Cocina weaves the story of an undocumented immigrant working in a restaurant, reflecting the plight of millions of low-wage restaurant workers who demand dignity, respect, and thriving wages. An Alfonso Ruizpascual film featuring Raúl Briones and Rooney Mara.
ROC United urges that core values and principles around civil liberties and social justice should guide our commitment to build worker power, including to protect immigrant workers' rights and provide a path to legal status for the estimated 12 million undocumented immigrants living in the United States.
