Gather at 7pm for 7.30pm.You will all know that William Wallace was captured at Robroyston at the edge of Glasgow, on Friday 3rd August 1305.
Once captured he was taken first to Dumbarton Castle, where his now famous sword was left behind, he was then taken south to London, to be put through a sham trial then murdered for crimes he did not commit.
As is clearly quoted in this version from this patriotically defiant extract, taken from the book ‘Lives of Scottish Worthies’ by Patrick Fraser Tytler, published in 1831.
WALLACE.
“I can not be a traitor, for I owe him no allegiance. He is not my Sovereign; he never received my homage; and whilst life is in this persecuted body, he never shall receive it. To the other points whereof I am accused, I freely confess them all. As Governor of my country I have been an enemy to its enemies; I have slain the English; I have mortally opposed the English King; I have stormed and taken the towns and castles which he unjustly claimed as his own. If I or my soldiers have plundered or done injury to the houses or ministers of religion, I repent me of my sin; but it is not of Edward of England I shall ask pardon.”
The SOWW marks Wallace's capture with an annual commemoration of this horrible betrayal with a short heartfelt service at the magnificent memorial at Robroyston. Just a two minute walk from the famous Wallace Well.
As part of the service, one of the Society committee will make speech, we hope to have an invited guest speaker.
You as an attendee might wish to prepare something, as is the tradition at Robroyston, to invite anyone who wishes, to say a few words, come on you know you want to.
