About this Event
Award-winning, internationally-renowned jazz and blues singer Roberta Donnay presents a joyful celebration of roots, standards and holiday music, with guitarist Danny Caron.
Influenced at an early age by the music of Louis Armstrong, Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, and Bessie Smith, Donnay began singing professionally at age 16 in her home town of Washington D.C. After relocating to San Francisco, she continued to sing Dixieland and traditional jazz with local band leaders, including Dick Oxtot and Jimmy Price. Later, Donnay toured internationally as a member of Dan Hicks & the Hot Licks.
When legendary jazz producer Orrin Keepnews recognized Donnay's talent, he took her under his wing to produce her first jazz recording, What's Your Story. Donnay then followed her passion for American roots music and formed the Prohibition Mob Band, recording three albums and continuing to delight audiences with raw, bawdy, vintage jazz, blues, and swing. Last year, she released Blossom-ing!, celebrating the music of Blossom Dearie.
“With her singularly enticing sound, few contemporary vocalists are as well suited to dustily vintage material as jazz-blues stylist Roberta Donnay.” – Jazz Times
