Roberta Donnay & the Prohibition Mob bring their jazzy music to the outdoor space at The Back Room!
About this Event

"Party Like It's 1925!"

Award-winning jazz recording artist Roberta Donnay & the Prohibition Mob are thrilled to bring their show to the outdoor stage at Berkeley’s legendary venue, The Back Room! Donnay’s interest in roots jazz music was inspired by singing with Dick Oxtot’s Golden Age Jazz Band, recording with legendary jazz producer Orrin Keepnews, researching lost and obscure material from the Jazz Age, and as singer/percussionist with the iconic group Dan Hicks & The Hot Licks.

As a performer, Ms. Donnay has opened for or performed with Joey Alexander, George Benson, Michelle Coltrane, Elvis Costello, Charles Davis, Bob Dorough, David Grisman, Bela Fleck, Macy Gray, John Hammond, Herbie Hancock, Dr. John, Rickie Lee Jones, Huey Lewis, Little Feat, Jonny Lange, Christian McBride, Maria Muldaur, Lewis Nash, Jeff Oster, Leon Russell, Bonnie Raitt, Lee Ritenour, Joe Sample, David Sanborn, Booker T., Tuck and Patti, and more. "Bathtub Gin" won Best Albums 2015 in DownBeat Magazine, “A Little Sugar” spent 9 weeks on the Jazz radio charts, and “My Heart Belongs to Satchmo” was featured in DownBeat.

Donnay is listed in the top 521 Jazz singers in the book, “ JAZZ SINGERS,” by Scott Yanow.

“Roberta Donnay & the Prohibition Mob Band present a modern take on the hot swingin’ jazz and sultry blues of the 1920s and 30s that will make you want to dance all night!” – Verdi Club

Roberta Donnay and the Prohibition Mob Band bring to new life the blues and jazz of the 1920s and '30s, diving deep into the music of Bessie Smith, Ma Rainey, Sippie Wallace, Ethel Waters, and Ida Cox. Roberta's "interpretive license is valid for both jazz and blues," and that she "knows exactly how far she can go drawing inspiration from time-honored singers...without sacrificing a sense of self." - DownBeat Magazine

A SPECIAL NOTE FROM THE BACK ROOM

Thank you for your interest in this show. It is part of our outdoor concert series, which is a new thing for us, and very different in atmosphere and logistics from our indoor shows.

Masks will be required (except for singers on stage, who will have a plexiglass barrier) and seats will be properly distanced. Tickets bought together will be presumed to be in the same pod. Please write and tell us whatever else we need to know about that ([email protected]).

The seats will be standard folding chairs - no comfy couches this time, but they will be comfortably shaded. Only 50 tickets will be sold, and we expect all or most of them to be bought in advance. (Reimbursement for cancellation is guaranteed with 24 hour’s notice, and rain or heavy smoke may cause a cancellation from our end).

Please keep in mind that evenings can be chillier than expected, especially when sitting still, so bring something warm! Cups of water will be available, but it might be a good idea to bring your own drinks/snacks.

THANK YOU FOR SUPPORTING LIVE MUSIC!

Tickets are $25 and we strongly encourage you to purchase them in advance (available at the link below), or you may purchase your tickets from Sam directly on the evening of the show. Seating will be available one half hour before show time. We accept cash only on-site (ATMs are nearby).

The Back Room is an all-ages, BYOB (for those 21+) space, dedicated to (mostly) acoustic music of all kinds. You are welcome to bring your own adult beverage with no additional corkage fee. If you need more information or have any questions, please call us: #510-654-3808. Thank you for your support!
