About this Event
What is it like for you to be an American?
The answer will be different for all 340 million of us.
Acclaimed portrait photographer Robert Kalman spent four years traveling through the United States taking nearly 500 portraits of people with his 8x10 camera. Each subject was asked one question: “What is it like for you to be an American?”
The responses, handwritten by each person, were depicted to create a spectrum of ideas about what it is like to live in this country in this era.
This presentation includes a demonstration of how the portraits were made using the 8x10. One person in the audience will be asked to pose, and answer the question about what it’s like to be an American. That person receives a print of their portrait.
Books of this project will be available on-site.
