This celebration is an annual SABS November event, paying tribute to one of the founding fathers of blues music. We celebrate Robert Johnson's music recorded here in San Antonio back in 1936 at the historical Sheraton-Gunter Hotel, including Sweet Home Chicago, Cross Road Blues, and Ramblin’ on My Mind. Robert Johnson has been inducted into the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame. Twice.
The Events in 1936:
Robert Johnson records for Don Law at The Gunter Hotel in late November, 1936. Don Law was a Producer for the American Record Corporation, the predecessor to Columbia Records. Recordings took place over three days; November 23, 26, and 27. Two rooms were used; rooms 413 and 414. Robert was in one of the rooms with the microphone running over to the next room where Don Law's team was with the recording equipment. The Gunther Hotel has a suite designated as the Robert Johnson room. The hotel constructed a beautiful display in the lobby commemorating the recordings. Through the efforts of the San Antonio Blues Society and endorsed by the Robert Johnson Blues Society, the Robert Johnson Historical Marker was placed in the lobby.
The sixteen songs recorded by Robert Johnson at the Gunter Hotel, November 1936:

If this name is not familiar to you, you are not alone. Yet this true Texas Bues Legend has been has been labeled The Texas Tornado, The Malice from Dallas, The Young Eric Clapton, and The Last Great Bluesbreaker Guitarist. Though he Among the greats and blues royalty worldwide, Rocky has earned a solid reputation for not only for his illustrious guitar work, but also for his incredible songwriting. Rest assured, Rock Athas is the show that the legends will pay to go see.
Rocky is one in the great line of Texas-born Blues players. His first notoriety came with the success of his band, Lightning, as they were embedded in the local Dallas music scene. This lead to a heavy touring schedule around Texas. By the age of 23 he was being heralded for his guitar work. Among others, the Texas music magazine Buddy ranked Rocky among the Top 10 best guitarists, sharing these heralds with the Vaughan brothers, Johnny Winter, Billy Gibbons, and Eric Johnson. Now a hot commodity and everyone noticing him, Rocky took his talents on the road. His guitar work got him in with Black Oak Arkansas, recording two albums with them. Not only playing guitar but writing some of BOA's biggest hits. During that time, a strong friendship was formed between Rocky and the Bolin brothers, Johnnie and Tommy. With Tommy's untimely death in 1976, Rocky joined Johnnie and Glenn Hughes (Deep Purple and Trapeze) performing tribute shows to honor the work of their fallen friend and brother, culminating in the 2009 release of A Tribute to Tommy Bolin.
In 2000, Buddy Miles asked him to perform, along with Double Trouble, on Buddy's new album project, Blues Berries. In that time, Rocky formed a solid relationship with Blue Berries' producer Jim Gaines that would come into play a few years later in 2003. That is when Rocky formed The Rocky Athas Group and released their first album, Miracle; produced by Jim Gaines. The band's next two album releases came in 2005 and 2007, VooDoo Moon and Lightning Strikes Twice respectively. In 2009 the big call came: The Godfather of British Blues, John Mayall, was so impressed with Rocky that he asked him to play lead guitar on the soon to be released album, Tough. The same happened with the next Mayall album, A Special Life. A strong relationship was forged and Rocky toured with John all the way through 2016. Rocky released a series of albums beginning with 2014's release of Let My Guitar Do The Talking - With My Friends, with appearances by Smokin' Joe Kubek and John Mayall. In 2015 he released Volumes I and II of The Essential Rocky Athas, and in 2017 was the release of Shakin' The Dust, produced by Jim Gaines. His latest release, Livin' My Best Life, came out this year to expected rave reviews.
Rocky had recorded nine albums. And he has been on seven albums with the likes of John Mayall, Buddy Guy, and Black Oak Arkansas. Once again, this is the guy the great players come to see perform. Now

The Palacios Brothers became Member Artists of the San Antonio Blues SOciety back in 2011. Though not from the area, they came to our jam one Thursday night and pretty soon they were making the rounds in the area. Oldest brother Delio leads the band. He sings and plays the bass and accordion. Lead guitar is handled by Brian along with vocals. Maurice is the drummer and background vocalist. They cover all major genres short of heavy metal so their blues comes with a lot of extra soul. The three travelling brothers have many fans here in San Antonio, playing halftime shows, festivals and events, and clubs. Their roots are in Hebronville and they travel everywhere to receptive audiences. They appreciate having kin across Texas. With one van to haul all the equipment and the brothers for thousands and thousand of miles, family and friends provide the guys a good place to rest and fuel up. Mile after mile, gig after gig. All over Texas.

John Cockerell -
Facebook [www.facebook.com/john.cockerell.9]
John has been with the San Antonio Blues Society for two decades, as a Member of the Board, as Director of Educational Programs, and as Musician Emeritus. A Delta Blues Master, John plays guitar (electric and resonator) and harmonica, sings, and composes music. His music was under his label, Cosmic Creole. It follows that he is a music historian and collector. His mantra: Respect the Roots! In the 60s, young John played with garage bands around San Antonio. Then, as with many young in the 60's, John went to Viet Nam with the 4th Infantry out of Ft. Sam. Amid the horror, seldom would there be down time. When there was, you would find John singing and strumming requests from his buddies. He was their "hooch" singer. Upon returning home, John devoted himself to his music. He lived in Austin as a street musician and in San Antonio he played with Bottom Line Blues, Solid Sender, and the S.A. Blue Cats. He attended Our Lady of the Lake University and began a career as a social worker, earning recognition for his work in the field of disability awareness. Notable musical moments: performing with John Lee Hooker, Big Joe Williams, Mance Lipscomb, Pinetop Perkins, Honey Boy Edwards, Spot Barnett, Curley Mays, Sauce Gonzalez, Jack Barber, and Guitar Shorty. In Austin, John has performed at many of the SxSW events and has performed at the historic Victory Grill.

The San Antonio Blues Society, Inc. is a Texas not-for-profit 501(c) corporation, founded in October 1990. The Society was established for the purpose of promoting and preserving blues music. It is our mission to ensure the continuation of blues music by offering educational programs within our community, and to preserve locations and artifacts relevant to the history of blues music and its artists. We support blues venues and blues artists through our promotional efforts and participation in blues-related activities and events. As well as hosting jam sessions where local and visiting artists can sit in and play, SABS also produces / co-produces shows showcasing local and international blues artists. We are always striving to encourage our community to appreciate the historical value and the enjoyment of blues music.
Our Continuing Missions in the Community - Sam Baird Scholarship:
This scholarship continues the legacy of noted musician and SABS member Sam Baird, who supported and nurtured the growth of the San Antonio music community for many years. Announced in 2006, this local scholarship fund is awarded to students displaying academic strength and musical ambition. This award is presented annually at the Fiesta Blues Heritage Series and is a very special event involving family, friends, and a very appreciative audience. SABS works in conjunction with Art and Music Directors to announce and promote this opportunity to eligible local students. This is an ongoing endeavor that we put our full effort into working with schools, parents, corporate sponsors, and community leaders to get as many students involved as possible.
Our Continuing Missions in the Community - Blues in the Schools:
Preserving the heritage of blues music in our region is not our only task. We also bring the music to the community via the local school systems. Actual performances at the local schools give our young people the chance to hear the music that is the foundation of what they listen to today. Since 2004 we have performed before student bodies, presenting the music that is part of our national heritage. We always seek student participation and at these performances we have been able to bring up students to jam with the band. While the majority of our BITS presentations are at high schools, we also include elementary schools. You are never to young for The Blues!
