About this Event

Pace Live is pleased to present Robert Irwin: A Conversation with Marc Glimcher, Michael Govan, and Jarl Mohn in Los Angeles on Saturday, April 5. Marking the opening of Robert Irwin in Los Angeles—the first posthumous exhibition of the artist’s work in California—this live event, taking place in the gallery’s courtyard, will bring Pace CEO Marc Glimcher, LACMA Director Michael Govan, and collector and philanthropist Jarl Mohn into conversation about Irwin’s legacy and his enduring impact on the arts in LA. On view at Pace in LA through June 7, Robert Irwin in Los Angeles features historic works created by the artist between 1960 and 1970, the most prolific decade of his career, and celebrates his many contributions to Southern California cultural institutions.

Marc Glimcher has served as CEO of Pace Gallery since 2011, now working alongside President Samanthe Rubell, whom he appointed in 2022. Under his leadership, Pace has greatly expanded its international scope. Over the past ten years, with Glimcher’s direction, Pace has opened new spaces across Los Angeles, London, Hong Kong, Seoul, Geneva, and Palo Alto (which operated from 2016–2022), as well as an office in Berlin. In 2024, Pace began welcoming visitors to its new gallery in Tokyo’s Azabudai Hills complex, and this year the gallery will open a new space in Berlin. Glimcher has also introduced major international contemporary artists—including Torkwase Dyson, Marina Perez Simão, Beatriz Milhazes, Sonia Gomes, Elmgreen & Dragset, Adrian Ghenie, Robert Longo, Robert Nava, and Trevor Paglen—into the gallery’s program.

Throughout his tenure, Glimcher has sought to upend traditional systems within the industry, creating a visionary model for collaboration. In February 2020, he spearheaded a collaboration between Pace, Gagosian, and Acquavella Galleries to sell the distinguished collection of Donald Marron in a deal that disrupted the precedent of auction house collection sales. He has also curated dozens of exhibitions, including Picasso: 14 Sketchbooks, 1900–1959, mounted in 2023 in New York; Seeing Picasso: Maker of the Modern (2019–20), the first monographic Picasso exhibition to be presented in the Bay Area in nearly a decade; and Agnes Martin: The Distillation of Color (2021) in New York.

Michael Govan is the CEO and Wallis Annenberg Director of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA). Since coming to LACMA in 2006, he has overseen the transformation of the 20-acre campus with buildings by Renzo Piano and monumental artworks by Chris Burden, Michael Heizer, Robert Irwin, Barbara Kruger, and others. At LACMA, Govan has pursued his vision of contemporary artists and architects interacting with the museum’s historical collections, as evidenced by exhibition and gallery designs, as well as programming in collaboration with artists and architects. Currently, the museum is in the process of building a new, state-of-the-art permanent collection building designed by Pritzker Prize–winning architect Peter Zumthor.

Jarl Mohn is President Emeritus of NPR having served as CEO from 2014 to 2019. Previously he ran MTV/VH1 and E! Entertainment Television before a 16 year career in venture capital. He and his wife Pamela collect Minimalism and California Light, Space and Surface works. They recently gifted 300 works of emerging and under recognized LA artists to be shared by LACMA, MOCA and The Hammer in an initiative called MAC3, The Mohn Art Collective. ArtNews includes them on their list of top 200 international collectors. They live in LA.
