Join the Art Deco Society of Washington for a special day at the Hillwood Estate, Museum, and Gardens to explore the Roaring Twenties: The Life and Style of Marjorie Merriweather Post.
“The Great Gatsby” fictionalized the excess and glamour of the Jazz Age. Marjorie Merriweather Post embraced it. The progress, prosperity, and liberation that characterized the 1920s had a significant effect on the role of women in America, and Post typified the independent “new woman”.
Help ADSW celebrate the life of Marjorie Post and the 125th anniversary of F. Scott Fitzgerald's birth for a private Curator lecture, followed by a Tour of the Roaring Twenties exhibit and optional Afternoon Tea.
Hillwood founder Marjorie Merriweather Post was a prominent businesswoman and philanthropist during the era known as the Roaring Twenties. One hundred years later, Hillwood celebrates Post's impact on the period—her impeccable attire, stylish furnishings, impressive art, and an astonishing collection of jewelry helped make her one of the most influential women of the 1920s.
The decorative objects and glamorous gowns on display in this exhibition reveal a legendary lifestyle, and the range of art and style that embodied the essence of the Roaring Twenties. These items from Post's life demonstrate the allure, excitement, and international nature of this remarkable decade.
In addition to an opening lecture by Curator Megan Martinelli, the program includes a guided tour of Hillwood's mansion, and the greenhouses and grounds will be open throughout the day for self-tours. Hillwood also shows a 12-minute orientation film every 30 minutes in the Visitor Center theater.
