Part of Toronto's 1920s Jazz Age Dance Weekend June 5-7, 2026!
Beginner Lessons & Dance Party, Saturday June 6th, 6pm to 11pm
Theme: Jazz Age Garden Party
Band: Ben Harvey and his Ornamentals!
(The 1920s Jazz Age edition of the Ben Harvey Combo, a favourite band at Saturday Night Swing.)
Great music for swing dancing and 1920s dances.
5:30pm: Doors
6pm: 1920s Partner Charleston lesson.
6:30-7:40pm: 1920s Vernacular Fox Trot and One Step lesson, from fast & jazzy to slow & romantic. This was by the far the most popular dancing in the 1920s and Jazz Age, when everyone danced. It is fun, free-spirited and easy to learn. The basic step is just walking.
Some Jazzy Foxtrot in 1929:

More about 1920s Fox Trot and Charleston:
Fox Trot in the Jazz Age was a broad concept. It could include One Step, Two Step, and alternating between slow and quick steps. It is not modern ballroom Foxtrot.
The swing music from the Jazz Age and Swing Era that is played at swing dances today, is almost always described, on the original records and sheet music, as music for Fox Trot. (Because that is what people mostly danced then, including to swing music.)
In the mid 1920s there was a huge Charleston dance craze. 1920s Charleston is still widely done today, including by Lindy Hoppers around the world.
The roots of these dances and the music they were typically done to is African American.
