Kathryn “Katie” Thomson was appointed acting secretary of the Maryland Department of Transportation by Wes Moore on December 18, 2025. She brings more than 30 years of experience in transportation, aviation, energy, and sustainability law and policy, most recently serving as deputy administrator and chief operating officer of the Federal Aviation Administration, where she oversaw a $20 billion annual budget and more than 45,000 employees. Thomson previously served as general counsel at the U.S. Department of Transportation and led implementation of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, while also holding leadership roles at Amazon and the law firms Sidley Austin and Morrison & Foerster.
