About this Event
LA River Public Art Project | www.LARiverPublicArtProject.org
Join LA River Public Art Project exploring art, culture, and place along the LA River. In the spirit of Hyonaayn’ar, a relational word in Tongva that means both teacher and student, participants will delve into the river’s ephemeral histories and theoretical ecological futures while tracing a diversity of cultural responses to the river.
Guided walks every second Saturday of each month of 2023 will visit important cultural sites starting with the sources of the river in the foothills of the Santa Susana Mountains in January all the way to Long Beach in December.
MILE 40On March 11th, we will visit “The Great Wall of Los Angeles”, a mural designed by Judith Baca and executed in 1978 with the help of over 400 community youth and artists coordinated by Baca’s public art non-profit: the Social and Public Art Resource Center. We will also walk with Gabrielino Tongva Culture Bearer, Tina Orduno Calderon, while learning about the importance of this water and land to the Original People and about the history and potential future of significant sites along our walk.
Our meander will include:
- Gathering before and after our excursion to center ourselves in relation to the land and each other with guidance from Tina Orduno Calderon.
- Artist talk along the Great Wall of Los Angeles - with Judy Baca or a representative from her non-profit, SPARC(tent.)
- Walking along the Tujunga Greenway guided by Culture Bearer Tina Calderon
- Visiting a little known sculpture garden guided by the artist (tent.)
**Please bring water and wear walking/hiking shoes and a hat
***This experience is in two parts: a visit to the Great Wall of LA, then a drive to the nearby sculpture garden
Tour time: 11am - 2pm
