About this Event
Take part in restoring a a beautiful brook near Siston, helping us create space for wildlife and meet like-minded people.
Natural woody debris, such as brushwood berms and hinged trees aim to replicate natural processes in a river where fallen woody material diverts the flow of a stream, encouraging channel sinuosity (re-wiggling), exposing gravels which are vital for fish, and collecting sediments to create alternating pool and riffle habitats. The result of this is a far greater variety of micro-habitats with lots of niches for wildlife to thrive in. By slowing down the flow, these features also over time can help naturally mitigate against flooding downstream, and help retain surrounding soil moisture during dry weather.
The work itself will involve installing brash and logs into place within the brook's channel in strategic places where it has been historically straightened, securing it in place with wooden stakes and jute rope. BART will provide all equipment necessary for installation including Waders.
