River of Remembrance is a Living History tour that invites participants to walk the sacred ground of the 1917 East St. Louis Race Massacre.
About this Event

River of Remembrance is a healing-centered, immersive guided tour that invites participants to walk the sacred ground of the 1917 East St. Louis Race Massacre with reverence and restoration in mind.

The tour will begin at the East Riverfront Metrolink station Parking lot located by the Casino Queen (100 South Front Street 62201) in Historic East St. Louis, IL.

Afterward participants will board a tour bus and spend an hour and a half visiting the Sacred Sites where atrocities occurred all while seeing re-enactments of the eye witness stories of survivors. Participants will also see areas of cultural, business, and religious interest.

These areas include:

The site of the marker for Sacred site #20 (9th and St. Clair) where “On May 28, 1917, whites set fires and accosted African Americans around St. Clair Avenue. Authorities dispersed the rioters, but the troubles were not over.”

The site of the marker for Sacred site #1 (Truelight Baptist Church) where “The bell of this church rang out about 11p.m. on July 1, 1917, as both a warning and a call to arms. Trouble was brewing.”

The site of the marker for Sacred site #2 (1700 Bond Avenue) where “Dr. Leroy Bundy lived here. He was a community leader in 1917. He stood trial and was found guilty of causing the riot. He was sentenced to life in Pr*son. He was later exonerated by the Illinois Supreme Court.”

411 East Broadview (downtown) where the violence coalesced and then spread to African American neighborhoods.

The experience will end with a silent march from 411 East Broadview to the Wyvetter H, Younge Higher Education Campus, located at 601 James R. Thompson Blvd. There participants will hear from a descendant of survivors and participate in a closing libation ceremony.

PLEASE NOTE: Friday and Saturday tours will happen outside during the summer evening. Though the bus will be air conditioned, participants will spend time interacting with living history performances in the June heat.

IF YOU HAVE HEAT SENSITIVITY, THE SUNDAY, JUNE 28, 3PM PERFORMANCE WILL TAKE PLACE INSIDE AT THE SUNSHINE CULTURAL ARTS CENTER. (630 N 59th St, East St Louis, IL 62203). THE SUNDAY, JUNE 28, 3PM PERFORMANCE WILL NOT BE A TOUR. IT WILL BE A STAGED PERFORMANCE DESIGNED TO DRAMATIZE THE EVENTS OF THE 1917 EAST ST. LOUIS RACE MASSACRE.
