Hear a reading from Kara Briggs’ (Sauk-Suiattle) recently released poetry collection "Rivers in My Veins." A resident of the Tulalip Reservation and descendant of the Yakama Nation, Briggs reflects on her many connections to the natural world through her award-winning writing.
About Kara Briggs
Kara Briggs is a resident of the Tulalip Reservation and a Sauk-Suiattle Citizen, Yakama direct descendant. She grew up in Spokane, Wash., attended Whitworth College (later University), worked for The Spokesman-Review. She returned to Washington in 2007 to live on her husband’s grandfather’s original allotment on the Tulalip Reservation.
She has worked as an interim vice president of The Evergreen State College, and now as Vice President of Tribal Lands and Waters at Ecotrust, a nonprofit that serves Washington, Oregon, California and Alaska. She graduated in 2024 with a remote MFA from the Institute of American Indian Arts.
Her literary debut is "Rivers in My Veins," a poetry book about her tribal family from across Washington State’s Cascade Mountains and Columbia River.
Copies of "Rivers in My Veins" will be available in the Museum Store.
