Rising Together: How Chinese Immigrants Shaped US Social Justice History

“A rising tide lifts all boats.”

The history of Chinese Immigrants has always been one that is told with sorrow and anger for the injustice, or the praise for the construction of the Transcontinental Railroad. However, we don’t hear much about the stories centered around Chinese values, individual agency, and collective strength of the immigrants who survived and thrived.

Join us for an inspiring afternoon, where we learn more about Chinese immigrants’ active contribution to the American civil rights and social justice landscape. Dive into narratives of resilience, unity, and triumph that have shaped our communities.

• How Chinese hand laundry owners in San Francisco united against anti-Chinese policies
• The fight for Chinese-English bilingual education in local schools
• The role of associations based on district of origin, family name, and occupation in creating networks for success in the U.S.

Through this event, we hope that each of us can feel more connected with our rich history as Chinese immigrants and Chinese Americans; experience Chinese immigrant history through the lens of individual and collective agency and power; and embrace a greater sense of solidarity, understanding that together, we can achieve more.
