Rise Up! is a FREE festival with a purpose. Our community is facing an existential threat; the state government wants to shut down East Brisbane State School and fence residents out of the largest greenspace on the KP peninsula - all for a two weeks sports event. But we’re not backing down without a fight!
Come join us in Raymond (aka Pineapple) Park for the mother of all community festivals.
Help us show the government how important this greenspace is while enjoying a celebratory afternoon filled with live music and revelry.
Dance under the brilliant winter sun to Ziggi’s African Groove, enjoy the folk stylings of Greta Stanely and blues of Dana Gehrmann . Grab a bite to eat at a food truck and maybe even get your face painted (all ages). For the young at heart, make sure you unleash your inner child on the adults jumping castle.
For those with little ones, bring a rug and get cozy under the figs for drag storytime with the fabulous Chocolate Boxx. Have some fun on the children’s jumping castle (under 12s) or let the kids run amok on the playground.
Please ensure to RSVP via the ticketing link so we can ensure provide appropriate amenities and catering.
Presented by Friends of Raymond Park and supported by Gabba Ward Cr Trina Massey, South Brisbane MP Amy MacMahon, and Griffith MP Max Chandler-Mather, Rise Up! Festival is the next step in our community campaign to ensure the Olympic Games leaves behind a legacy we can all be proud of.
Instead of wasting $2.7 billion demolishing and rebuilding the Gabba Stadium, we are calling on the state government to invest in our underfunded schools, hospitals, and public housing. This is a David and Goliath battle for which we need all the help we can get. So come down to Raymond Park, stand in solidarity with your community, and have a glorious time for an important cause.
Rise Up! Festival will take place on the lands of the Jagera and Turrbal peoples. Sovereignty has never been ceded and restitution for past and ongoing injustices has yet to be paid. We pay our respects to elders past and present, and extend that respect to all First Nations people in attendance.
Other communities around Southeast Queensland are also fighting their own battles against short-sighted Olympic developments and we believe building coalitions between our campaigns is integral to all of our success. To this end we would like to invite supportive community organisations to set up a stall on the day.

Transport
We encourage attendees to travel by active transport wherever possible.
If you are coming from farther afield, we strongly encourage you to use public transport. Raymond Park is 700m (10 min) walk along Main St from the Woolloongabba Busway Station which has connections to the entire city. Those traveling from the east can catch the 232 and 227 to Shafston Ave at Salstone Street, stop 11 which is a 250m (3 min) walk along Salstone St to Raymond Park.
There is extremely limited street parking available on the surrounding streets.

Accessibility
This is an all-ages family friendly event. Unfortunately there are no change tables available. You are welcome to breast-feed wherever you are comfortable.
This is a dog friendly event. Dogs are required to remain leashed, however there is a dog off-leash area within the park.
This is a LGBT+ friendly event. All toilets will be unisex. No racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, ableism, or any other discrimination or bigotry will be tolerated.
This is a disability friendly event. There will be one accessible toilet. There is an accessible path running through the park, but most of the festival will be on grass which may be uneven. There are no formal chill-out zones, but this is a large park and there will be plenty of quieter spaces away from the festival zone that attendees can escape to.
We are working to make this a culturally safer space for First Nations peoples. There will be an elders tent set up in a central location with a view of the stage, close to toilets, with tea and refreshments available.
We do not want anyone to go hungry. There will be a selection of fruit and snacks on offer for free as well as full meals available to purchase from a variety of food trucks.

Why is the school and park under threat?
Despite widespread community opposition, the Queensland Government is forging ahead with its plans to completely rebuild the Gabba Stadium for the 2032 Olympics. Project costs have already blown out to $2.7 billion and are likely to be much higher by the time construction actually begins.
In order to facilitate the redevelopment, the state government plans to close down the heritage-listed East Brisbane State School which is located right next to the Gabba Stadium. This is devastating news for the local community and for the many thousands of parents, teachers and students at the school.
There are no solid plans for where the school would relocate to, with a half-baked proposal for a new campus on the Coorparoo Secondary College grounds the only option presently on the table. This plan was strongly opposed by the school community according to a recent survey by the P&C which would leave the current catchment without a primary school.
Along with the stadium rebuild, a proposed Olympics warm-up facility would destroy Raymond Park as we know it. A full-sized athletics track won’t fit within the current boundaries of Raymond Park, which means established trees, community facilities and neighbouring homes could be removed to make room for the track and the supporting structures including spectator stands, change-rooms, and security infrastructure. This would be a devastating loss for Kangaroo Point and the inner-southside which already has less parkland per resident than New York City.
We are committed to fighting for our community. Rise Up! Festival is the first event in a series of actions the community has planned to step up the campaign to save our school and park.
