The RCHS will hold their annual meeting on Tuesday, November 19 at 7:00PM at Manhattan's Public Library Auditorium, 629 Poyntz Ave., Manhattan Kansas. The Society Board will hold a brief business meeting with an annual report and election of new officers for 2025, kick-off of their new strategic plan, followed by a presentation by Professor Ray Yunk and his students. The Marlatt Homestead, home of one of the Bluemont College founders, is the featured topic at the annual meeting of the Riley County Historical Society in November.
Made of local limestone in prairie vernacular style, the home is considered one of the oldest standing stone house in Riley County. Davies Wilson, a surveyor and land speculator, built the home around 1856. Washington Marlatt purchased the property in 1858.
Presenters for the historical highlight will be Professor Ray Yunk, professor in Kansas State University's GE Johnson Department of Architectural Engineering and Construction Science, and several students who are working on the project. Yunk assembled an interdisciplinary undergraduate research team to assess and provide preservation advice for the home, barn and site.
The meeting is free—no reservations needed—and all history buffs are welcome. Light refreshments will be provided.
