About the Book:
Under the Panther Moon, a celebrated book that captures the essence of wild Florida amid a time of tremendous change is now twenty years old. For this anniversary edition, the book features additional text, artwork, and a special new cover design. Paul Schulz painted a rescued Florida panther cub with Valencia oranges to create the cover paintings that symbolize the extraordinary natural legacy we hope to save. The great challenge for Florida is how to save the best of what remains of our state's wild areas and agricultural properties. Perhaps the best we can hope is that state and local government officials, working in concert with conservationists, farmers, ranchers, and developers, can finish connecting wildlife corridors before it is too late. And time is not on our side. If this is not done in the next twenty years, Under the Panther Moon will be considered a history book, and the tales contained within it distant memories of the last generation to experience them. So, our charge is clear. Let's come together as Floridians of goodwill and protect the wildlife corridors that remain.
About Rick Dantzler:
Rick Dantzler is a third-generation Floridian who grew up in Winter Haven. He attended Polk County public schools from kindergarten through the 12th grade – including Winter Haven High School - and the University of Florida for undergraduate and law school.
In 1982, at the age of 26, he was elected to the Florida House of Representatives where he served for eight years. In 1990, he was elected to the Florida Senate where he served until resigning in 1998 to run for the office of Governor of Florida. Later that year he became the Democratic nominee for Lieutenant Governor.
After leaving elected office, Dantzler worked as a lawyer and mediator. In early 2013, he accepted an appointment from President Obama to serve as the State Executive Director of the Farm Service Agency within the USDA. At the end of President Obama’s administration, Dantzler went back to practicing law before becoming the Chief Operating Officer of the Citrus Research and Development Foundation, a research foundation which serves the needs of the Florida citrus industry, in August of 2018.
