Opening Tuesday 19th November from 6:30 pm
From 19/11/2024 – to 11/01/2025
Richter Fine Art inaugurates Maternità on Tuesday, November 19th, the first solo exhibition in Italy by Polina Barskaya (1984, Cherkassy, Ukraine). The artist presents a series of new paintings with an intense autobiographical character, depicting moments of leisure, relaxation, and tranquility that marked some trips taken with her family in the regions of Tuscany, Umbria, and Lazio.
The invitation from the Richter Gallery aims to tell the story of Barskaya's artistic research, which aligns with her life. Painting and life travel on the same track, revealing a relationship of necessary connection and symbiosis.
The title Maternità derives from the artist's natural need to express her condition of life, a physical and mental state that has allowed her to develop a new sensitivity and a further vision of herself in relation to the external world. Barskaya places the relationship at the center of her work, understood as a moment of meeting and intimate dialogue with her family. Thus, the project exposes the need to return to the intimate sphere of the familiar.
Although the artist portrays herself in a state of apparent detachment and passivity, she intends to convey the story of her existence with unequivocal clarity. The scenes, depicting moments of sharing with her daughter and husband, or showing her alone, prompt reflection on personal connections through a process of simplification that aims at an investigation of her own subjectivity.
Recalling the visual structure of a photographic story abruptly interrupted or otherwise in progress, the spatial construction of the works has a theatrical quality. Indeed, the painted scenes derive from photographs, whose pictorial transposition reveals an unexpectedly intimate character. This leads to the artist's choice to use small and medium formats, reflecting her spontaneous need to reveal with clarity—like a private confession—her condition as a woman, wife, and mother.
By shedding light on her present, Barskaya shows an autobiographical glimpse, devoid of any psychological content and further sentimental or emotional interpretations. The result is a cool mind that does not shy away from depicting her state with genuine simplicity. Common to all the works is a substantial painting style, characterized by plastic, rich brushstrokes that aim to portray the physicality of bodies and their imperfections without any scruples.
In the critical text, Maria Vittoria Pinotti states, “Polina Barskaya paints the story of her life and perpetually identifies herself in the phase of motherhood where, by presenting herself in such clear transparency, she becomes extremely simple and approachable. Thus, for Barskaya, painting the truth does not mean faithfully copying a subject, but rather translating it through her keen observation. It is pure realism, where the image is sculpted in a volumetric dimension, breaking down into a texture of brushstrokes that encapsulate the sensation of brightness, the transparency of light, and its continuous radiance.”
