Genre-defying music from two incredible artists, and a gig full of urgent and shifting rhythms and textures. Starting the year off in fine style, we’re joined by two of the most influential and exciting musicians in the UK; ground-breaking drummer Richard Spaven (Loyle Carner, Guru, Flying Lotus, José James, Jameszoo, Alfa Mist and Thom Yorke) and guitarist Stuart McCallum (Cinematic Orchestra, Jordan Rakei, Manu Delago, John Surman, Kenny Wheeler, Peter Gabriel). Ricard Spaven’s trademark sound is rooted in the UK club and hip-hop scenes, combining a machine-like accuracy on the drums with jazz-influenced improvisation; his precision beats sit easily alongside Stuart McCallum’s multi-layered, evocative and atmospheric sounds, creating immersive and hypnotic grooves.
TICKETS: £10 or £7 for students.
Pay on the door, or alternatively get advance tickets by emailing [email protected] or messaging the Jazz at The Lescar.
Doors 8pm, music 8.30pm.
Richard Spaven’s extraordinary drumming has resulted in gigs with the likes of Loyle Carner, Guru (Gang Starr), jazz/hip-hop vocalist José James and Brainfeeder artist Jameszoo. He has also worked with Alfa Mist as the duo 44th Move, and brings a style that interweaves the sonic glitches of a DJ with drum’n’bass and dubstep influences.
Stuart McCallum rose to prominence as guitarist with the Cinematic Orchestra, performing on acclaimed albums Ma Fleur, Live at the Royal Albert Hall, and Disney’s award-winning The Crimson Wing soundtrack. He’s one half of alt-folk duo The Breath, with whom he was nominated for a BBC Folk Award. A distinctive artist with a truly engaging personal sound.
