About the book
In BlindSighted: A Journey of Identity, Faith, and Healing, Rich Christiansen reveals his struggle to reconcile his upbringing with the complexities of his conception. After navigating a whirlwind of emotions—anger, betrayal, shame, and “a broken trust bone”—with the help of breathwork, meditation, and a life coach, he ultimately realized: “I had won the lottery with my parents and with my genetics. I have three strands of DNA—and because of it, I see myself as the luckiest man in the world.” Still, this revelation shattered his perception of himself, his identity, and his parents, testing his faith and launching him on a search for healing, acceptance, and self-love.
In BlindSighted, Rich lets readers in on his search for answers after discovering that he was one of the early donor-conceived children born in the USA. What all started in fun—his youngest brother, the only dark-haired one of the four, decided to do a DNA test—raised serious, heart-wrenching questions. As members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, the Christiansens had traced their Danish genealogy as far back in all directions as they could. How could one brother be 50% Ashkenazi Jew on his father’s side?
Ultimately, Rich learned that he shared a biological father with only one of his three brothers—and their father wasn’t John. It was David Hansen, MD, a renegade doctor who was excommunicated from the LDS church for performing abortions as part of his commitment to providing medical care to women without judgment. Rich is sharing his story to offer insights and hope to anyone struggling to unravel family secrets and find clarity in their own identity.
BlindSighted, a testament to the resilience of the human spirit and the transformative power of truth and love, is an honest, heartfelt memoir about navigating the intimate mazes of our lives and finding self-acceptance and peace.
