Sat Feb 18 2023 at 02:00 pm to 03:00 pm

Houston Metropolitan Dance Center | Houston, TX

An exciting performance of music, movement and kid-friendly poetry that presents Black history from Ancient Africa to modern day Houston.
About this Event

This exciting and interactive 45-minute performance uses singing, music, movement and kid-friendly spoken word poetry to celebrate the vital contributions of African Americans to the social, political and cultural life of the United States and beyond.

• Content spans thousands of years, from Ancient Africa (the invention of mathematics and navigation) to the modern day (Kamala Harris and Ketanji Brown Jackson) including Houston (Mayor Sylvester Turner, Simone Biles and Beyonce.)

• Special tributes to Queen Nefertiti, Martin Luther King, Duke Ellington, Aretha Franklin, Lauren Anderson and others.

• Original spoken-word poetry by two Poet Laureates of Houston, Deborah DEEP Mouton and Outspoken Bean, plus classic works by Langston Hughes, Maya Angelou and others.

• Performers include a former back-up singer to Whitney Houston.

• Our unique interactive theatrical approach encourages children to participate from their seats, answering questions, making suggestions, offering support and encouragement and much more. By directly engaging in the story, children have an emotional stake in the accomplishments depicted and retain biographical, historical, theatrical and musical knowledge long after the show has ended.

• This show is intentionally designed with dynamic movement and colorful costumes to capture and hold the attention of younger children as well as featuring the powerful performances and relatable emotional challenges that appeal to older children. The addition of beautifully sung, timeless music makes this experience unforgettable for all ages.
