The Royal Horticultural Society-Accredited (RHS) Level 2 Certificate in Practical Horticulture is ideal for those looking to pursue a career in horticulture, as well as those who simply want to stretch and challenge their gardening skills for personal interest. You will learn essential craft skills, including planting, pruning, propagation and maintenance, along with the establishment and management of turf, and maintenance of garden features.
When: Fridays, 10am – 3.15pm or Saturdays, 10am – 3.15pm. Starts September 2026 (32-weeks, Birmingham term-time only)
Topics covered on the RHS Level 2 Certificate in practical horticulture include:
• Plant identification
• Plant establishment
• Plant propagation
• Plant health
• Plant care
• Plant pruning
• Garden features
• Grassed areas
This certificate will be assessed through the formative assessment of skills by your tutors, direct observation by RHS Assessors, and a range of summative short answer tests.
In order to achieve this qualification, learners must complete and attain (pass, merit, distinction):
• Practical Competence Assessment Test
• Online Competence Assessment Test
This course is designed for passionate amateur gardeners, those looking to pursue a career in horticulture (such as professional gardening, landscaping, plant production and garden retai), and those in entry-level roles within horticulture.
There are no entry requirements, but applications for this course will be reviewed by Winterbourne House and Garden’s Horticultural education team who may invite you for an in-person conversation to ensure the course you have applied for meets your experience and aligns with what you hope to achieve from studying with us.
After completing the RHS Level 2 Certificate in Practical Horticulture, you may consider taking the Level 2 Certificate in the Principles of Plant Growth and Development, which offers a more theoretical approach to horticulture.
Many learners also go on to complete the RHS Level 3 qualifications at Winterbourne, which provide more in-depth skills and knowledge for those looking to pursue and further their careers in horticulture.
Past RHS Level 2 Certificate holders from Winterbourne have gone on to get entry level jobs in horticulture, undertake further training through apprenticeships and traineeships, volunteer here at Winterbourne or in other local gardens, or simply enjoy applying their newly developed skills and knowledge to their gardens at home.
