Here’s everything you need to know about Cube: people wake up in a cubical room that’s connected to other cubical rooms by hatches on each wall. They don’t know why they’re there or how to get out, but getting out sounds like a really great idea because some of the rooms have murderous traps inside. Like a pre-Saw Saw but without the moral lessons, or a locked-room-mystery version of Event Horizon but without the moral lessons, Cube is full of primitive CGI and problematic portrayals of neurodiversity and the kind of raw, high-concept, extremely Canadian filmmaking that just doesn’t exist anymore. You can almost feel the places commercial breaks would have been inserted.
And to that point, Cube turns out to be one of those movies that, on paper, sound simple but when remade or sequel-ized, fall flat — or as they say in the business, “it’s like Ghostbusters.” Many have tried! Cube had a sequel, a prequel, a Japanese remake, and plenty of spiritual successors (like that Netflix movie The Platform) but none get the vibe quite right. Cube is simple, legible, clearly constructed and very satisfying in exactly the way the actual cube in the movie isn’t. If you are the sort of person that has ever found a horror movie cozy, Cube is cozy. And if you are not the sort of person that has ever found a horror movie cozy, but you liked logic grid word puzzles as a kid, give Cube a try anyway.
